The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On the "bright" side, we at least know he has mad limbo skills.

Now that I think about, has anyone "praised" his "limbo skills"?

One of my favorite tweets from the omnibus freak outlast night.

@realDonaldTrump 1. Omnibus bill should have been vetoed. 2. Please don't get into a room w/Mueller. It would be suicide. 3. I can't understand why you are backing down/giving in to Dems. Reelection is going to be tough going. Is that it? You don't want another term?

So you're saying your worried he might be guilty, then?

The Orange House has announced that any steel/aluminum tariff exempts will expire on May 1st, unless the country in question gives in on bilateral (or NAFTA, in the case of Canada and Mexico) extortion attempts.

For a guy who (allegedly) has a degree in economics, he's doing all the worst possible things for the economy.

He probably bought the answers to the exam. And then promptly forgot them.

It takes effort to use a crib sheet and not get caught. That idiot probably was only able to glance at it a few times and had to guess on the rest of the questions (and of course got them wrong because he was an idiot who didn't study).

You're honestly better off just studying.

North Korea isn't going to strike first, that much is sure. Any military action on their part essentially guarantees the end of their country. If Trump tweets that we're gonna start bombing, they'll just take the advantage to make him look weak.

If we attack it won't be announced by a tweet. There's no realistic scenario where we attack at this point though.

It might be announced by a tweet. And that's not just me saying it. We've already had a "Trump Declares War via Twitter" scare, back in July. The first time he tried to ban transgender people from the military, Trump tweeted this:

After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow......

The Pentagon reportedly panicked when they saw this tweet, because it was believed by officials in the Department of Defense that Trump was about to announce a military strike against North Korea on his Twitter account.

You can't just say, "Oh, Trump would never Tweet that," because Trump Tweets a lot of things that no respectable President ever should or would. He announces policy decisions on his Twitter and has even fired Cabinet members on Twitter. There's no reason he wouldn't declare war there.

Yeah I don’t trust the North Korean regime to react with “he’s just talking shit on Twitter” if Trump tweets that military strikes are about to happen, sure its the most logical reaction if one understands US politics, but I’m not sure that the North Korea regime does, nor do I trust it to react rationally to anything.

In fairness to North Korea (and boy isn't that A Rare Sentence!), with a situation like that, I couldn't exactly blame them for presuming it was real, as believing it's not would be too costly if they were wrong. Similar to how every threat of bodily harm to the President is investigated, school shooting threat, bomb threat, etc. are treated.

In their continuing race to show who's actually the worst State Republican Party in the Country, Wisconsin's Republicans will attempt to change the law on Special Elections after a Judge (appointed by the Republican Governor) ordered the Elections to be called. The Governor, Scott Walker (R), is supporting the Republicans. The Speaker of the House and Leader of the Senate, both Republicans, also criticized the Judge.

With how bad the Republican Party is, on both the State and Federal Levels, we might start seeing the State Parties go extinct by 2020...

The thing about North Korea and twitter is that they actually stand to win by not reacting. If they’re able to call the Trump’s bluff in essence that’s instant points for them, and calling his bluffs is laughably easy.

They should have sent a poet.

Except there's a difference between bluster/belligerance and an overt threat and actual order to action - as mentioned earlier, those in the military were scared shitless when he did his attempted Trans ban, as they thought he was seriously about to order an attack on North Korea with it.

March for Our Lives is going on right now.

Currently, an 11-year-old is on stage.

"People have said I'm a tool of some nameless adults."

Thing is, she's delivering an obviously prepared speech (to a wildly cheering crowd). This won't convince her detractors, sadly.

That's not the point, nothing would convince them. They're morons who think that High schoolers can't possibly plan anything or hold opinions of their own. It's about reaching out to the people who are either on the fence or agree but aren't doing anything.

If a speech being written by someone else means the words have no meaning, then most great speeches would be meaningless.

Not even saying this is a great speech just that "They didn't write it themselves, so it has no meaning" is ridiculous.

Edit: Pagetopper, unfortunately.
