Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Glad that everyone attacked survived and are at least relatively well.
Weird reading about the shooter though, both because like myself he's from Illinois, and because his political views are oddly normal. Which is strange for a mass shooter as is the fact that he was involved in normal/non-violent politicking and got on well with those around him.
I follow some of the same kind of liberal/anti-GOP things on Facebook (needless to say, not the Bernie or Bust ones), and I'd never expect anyone posting there to engage in political violence, because they are so clearly focused on seeking change "within the system".
Well, isn't this just a nice little major snafu?
I swear, everything between Trump announcing his campaign and now seems like it's been nothing short of everything that could potentially go wrong for the Democrats indeed going horribly wrong. Did Obama anger the Scarlet Witch or something?

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryTo be fair, before the word terrorism widely entered our vocabulary the word thrown around would have been assassination attempt.
The people engaged in the shooting are apparently lucky that he was a terrible shot (and please don't read any more into that than the observation of fact). He had three minutes with everyone pinned down before police arrived and the police took him on with pistols at ranges that favor a rifle.

Well there is no way that the Right isn't going to run with this now.
If nothing else the GOP is probably going get boost of support if only out of sympathy. Wouldn't be surprised if "new concern" over left-wing become a top priority too.
We can only hope this situation doesn't get too "Reichstag Firesque".

Ah, but he's a white leftist terrorist. The GOP certainly believes in leftist terrorists; according to them every bad political movement, from Nazism to Communism to Islamism is the fault of the left.

It doesn't matter that he's a loopy extremist. The right-wing will be only too happy to paint every last one of us with the same brush as him, and people will believe them.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryIn Non-Shooting related news, 200+ Democrat Congresspeople are going to file a Lawsuit against Trump for violating the Emoluments Clause in the Constitution.
This is following the Lawsuit filed by Maryland and D.C. over the same thing.
While we're on the subject of idiots on the left, TYT has apparently been exploiting the Flint Water Crisis to promote a corporate friend
.
As someone going in for my PHD in history, it hurts mine too. "Hitler was a socialist" the right wing moron says, "it's in his party's name".

Going back a few pages, now that I'm caught up, I just wanted to respond to this:
Sadly, it's probably never going to happen. Unless Trump unquestionably and unequivically fucks things up for everyone, (like causes the next Great Depression and drops an atomic bomb on the US level of fucks up) his fandom will be entrenched. There will be people 30 years from now who speak about the good old days of Trump, the way Republicans fellate Reagan.
That's part of the danger of ever letting a madman like that or his fanbase in. Once they get their foot in the door, you may never get them out of your house.
Ditto.

| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |No, the best thing that can happen is for the shooter to be interrogated, prosecuted, and jailed. Now we're left with a dead man who can't answer any questions and who might be seen as a martyr. Justice has not been done.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, the media is going to have a field day with this, but I'm not as sure as some of the rest of you that this is really going to alter things that much in the long term. In the short-term, I think I'd actually be more worried about militia groups flaring up even more and them "patrolling" neighborhoods and cities and such just looking for a fight.

If that Heavy site can be trusted, he was a Bernie or Buster who hated both parties and wanted Sanders to join the Greens.
Bad enough when these idiots open their mouths, but this guy possibly just committed terrorism.
Hopefully this doesn't get exploited too badly.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
