Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

"Conservatism (more like reactionism at this point) cannot fail, it can only be failed." If Trump's wall isn't built, it's because of RIN Os holding him back. If Trump's grand plan for the US fails, it's because of internal sabotage. If they ever decide to see Trump as the weakling he is and turn on him, it's because they've decided to write him off as a liberal plant.
I don't really see even the most rabid Trumpists as being already in the "GOP are traitors to the cause" phase. It's only been 6 months and while Trump et al hasn't really done anything major, the effects hasn't been super negative either (foreign policy aside, which most Trumpists don't care about). I think they're still in "Dems/Deep State/Obama are obstructing Trump's glorious MAGA plan" phase.
Well, now we get to see whether or not Trump and the Republicans will go full Kristallnacht on us.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |I actually don't intend to shot back on the economic topic, because it is pretty pointless. Over here Germany is only important in the context of "what could the US pulling back from its NATO partners mean for Europe and for the US". Well, and it means more power for the EU, which in turn means more influence for France and Germany and less influence for the US. Which in turns means that there is a lot of things the US has taken for granted which might not be a forgone conclusion anymore.
It also means that there is a serious danger of certain groups stylizing Germany as the "big enemy" in this scenario. The whole "Fourth Reich" nonsense falls into exactly that kind of poisonous propaganda. Because it isn't used in a "the tides have turned and Germany is on the upswing again" context (which is hard to refute, Germany hasn't been that powerful at least since Bismarck), but in a "beware, the NAZ Is are back and we have to fight them" way.
But no matter how this will end, the US can only loose. Either the EU manages to prevail, which will result on a fourth big power in the world, one which might actually start to shot back when the US oversteps its bounds - for example by starting wars to ensure that the Petrodollar prevails over the Petroeuro. Or the EU doesn't prevail, which will cause war and chaos in Europe, which will lead to the US loosing important markets.
Maybe it was someone upset about being ignored by a GOP rep at a town hall. Or maybe he's miffed a call to their office got voicemail.
Disgusted, but not surprisedNope - aged 66, and god fucking dammit
, of course he was a Sanders supporter and considers Trump a traitor.
And since everyone (thankfully) survived and is in good condition, I have to wonder - will the tired litany of "Well if people just had more access to firearms, it wouldn't have happened!" get trotted out? Because who the hell is packing while playing/practicing baseball?

According to the article I linked, he was charged with Battery and "Aiding Damage to a Vehicle" in 2006, though the charges were later dropped.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"So Trump will speak about the shooting in 25 minutes.
Dear God, if he mentions that it's his birthday...
LOL even counting the increased violence thanks to Bernie Bros, the left still have only.... roughly 2 incidents of being violent happening.
Compared to the over 9000% increase of far right being violent since the election.

Hence the Precision F-Strike in my post. Unwanted Assistance barely begins to describe it.
Note - the Heavy article says he'd been charged with a crime, with those charges later getting dismissed, which is in line with the WaPo article.

A disgruntled Trump supporter would probably have waited for Democratic Congresspeople to start batting practice.
