Perhaps Better News: More from the Sixth (It is Crunch Time this Week)

Ossoff campaign has contacted majority of Georgia 6th voters in person

Just how deeply has the June 20 runoff touched Georgia 6th District’s residents?

Consider this: A majority of voters — 54 percent — told pollsters commissioned by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that they have been contacted in person by Democrat Jon Ossoff’s campaign. About one-quarter have been reached face-to-face by Republican Karen Handel’s backers. ADVERTISING

And that barrage of TV ads is having an impact as well — even if many prefer not to admit it. About one-third of 6th District residents report the campaign spots influenced their vote, including almost equal numbers of Democrats, Republicans and independents.

All those deep-blue Ossoff and stark-white Handel signs have their own part to play. About 14 percent of the electorate say their friends’ and neighbors’ opinions make a difference. With margins as close as they are in this race, the neighborly touch could be the difference.

The prevailing sentiment beneath it all: 6th District residents see this race as uniquely important. Whether voters view the election as a way to rebuke or protect President Donald Trump, a bellwether for next year’s midterms or a chance to assert their independence, there’s a consensus that it matters.

The poll shows a majority of the district’s residents — 52 percent — say next week’s vote is more important than past elections, and 45 percent say it’s at least as important as earlier contests. Only 3 percent say it’s less significant than previous votes.

Georgia 6th: Tide of out of state donors buoy Ossoff, Handel campaigns
Here are some eye-catching numbers for you on this balmy Monday afternoon: 96.5 and 78.

As far as we can tell, only $530,000, or about 3.5 percent, of Ossoff’s recent $15 million haul came from within Georgia — which appears to set a new national record in terms of percentage of out-of-state donations.

More than 14 percent of Ossoff’s contributions came from California and New York, states that traditionally donate more to outside campaigns. And his filings show he was aided substantially by Act Blue, the online Democratic fundraising platform that bundles small individual contributions.

Those figures, though, are incomplete. [Further explained in the article itself].

Meanwhile, roughly $991,000 of Handel’s $4.5 million raised in April and May came from Georgia (again, those numbers are incomplete). She was helped by donors in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, who sent her 11 percent of her campaign donations. She has held several fundraisers in the Washington area recently, which likely contributed substantially to those totals.

The numbers are striking ones. But they don’t paint the full picture.

When asked about fundraising earlier today, Ossoff had this to say:

“At least as of the previous financial disclosure, many more Georgians contributed to my campaign than to Secretary Handel’s. And when you’ve got $20, $30 million dollars of attack ads coming in from Washington super PA Cs on her behalf, it’s necessary to raise the resources to defend myself. I’m proud of the fact that the campaign is powered by small dollar, grassroots fundraising.”

Team Handel also didn’t immediately have more information available its smaller donors. Spokesman Charlie Harper did send along the following:

“Jon Ossoff has said he’s going to be beholden to his small dollar donors. That’s telling, given that 98.5% of his donors are from outside of Georgia, and concentrated in liberal bastions like San Francisco and Massachusetts. That’s why he’s afraid to debate on CNN, as he can’t let those who have invested in a ‘Resistance Summer’ see that he’s pretending to be something other than he promised in his fundraising appeals.”

Surge of 10K early votes on Saturday points to heavy 6th District turnout
More than 10,000 people cast ballots on Saturday in Georgia’s 6th Congressional District race, bringing the total number of votes already cast in the June 20 runoff phase to roughly 94,000. That’s nearly half the entire turnout in the April 18 phase of the contest.

The rule of thumb is that early voting is a friend to Democrats, while Republicans — who are older, presumably with more ingrained voting habits — turn out strong on Election Day.

In the April 18 vote, Ossoff won 48.1 percent, narrowly missing a victory without a runoff in traditionally GOP territory. Karen Handel collected 19.8 percent, besting several Republican rivals.

But early voting told a different story in that first round. Ossoff won even more handily among the early, in-person voters of Cobb, De Kalb and Fulton counties, taking 62 percent. Among early voters, Ossoff even took 57 percent of the vote in Cobb, the most Republican portion of the district.

Early voting accounted for only a quarter of the April 18 vote, but it could make up a larger share in Round Two.

AJC Poll: Georgia 6th voters reject House GOP’s health care overhaul
Health care is high on the minds of voters in Georgia’s 6th congressional district, but most disapprove of the House GOP’s current proposal to repeal and replace Obamacare.

More than 80 percent of the 745 likely voters surveyed last week in an Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll listed health care as an “extremely important” or “very important” issue for them as they’ve determined whether to vote for Republican Karen Handel or Democrat Jon Ossoff in the upcoming special election.

The issue ranked high in the eyes of more voters than any other surveyed, including taxes, abortion and transportation. Government spending was second.

Specifically, the cost of health care was seen a top issue across every political party, race and age group polled: 94 percent of likely voters surveyed said they were “extremely concerned” or “very concerned” about the issue.

Sixth District voters held particularly negative opinions about the GOP proposal to overhaul Obamacare that narrowly passed the House last month. Only one in four of the likely voters surveyed, and one-half of Republicans, said they approved of the American Health Care Act. The disapproval rating is 7 percentage points higher than the national Kaiser Health Tracking Poll released late last month.

Somewhat surprisingly, the House GOP proposal polled highest among likely Georgia voters of retirement age: 29 percent of the folks surveyed who were 65 and older supported the bill. While that voting bloc tends to lean toward the right, the American Health Care Act has been slammed by senior advocacy groups such as the AARP since it would allow insurers to charge older people higher monthly premiums.

As for Handel and Ossoff, the two are split on the House GOP proposal along predictably partisan lines. Handel said she’s “committed to working toward a full repeal and replacement of Obamacare that works for all Americans,” while Ossoff said the House plan “puts Georgians’ lives at risk.”

Marlene Weingart is a 62-year-old Handel supporter from Fulton County. She said she hopes Senate Republican leaders will be able to find enough support to pass the proposal.

“Healthcare is not a right or the job of the government,” she said. “Obamacare should be repealed and they need to simplify the healthcare system.”

@the "Most Legislation" thing. I do wonder how he would think that, given I don't think he's even made 1 piece of Actual legislation, and his Executive Orders seemed to have dried up. like, HOW does he think that? what does he do all day that makes him think that? he's done nothing, how does he think he's done everything?

I'm afraid I can't explain myself, sir. Because I am not myself, you see?

Well, it's easy to think you're the best when you literally know nothing about anyone else. Of course he thinks what he's done is monumental; he has no idea what the monuments of the past even were.

As far as he's concerned, every other president sat on their asses and twiddled their thumbs when they could have been making America great again. For example, why couldn't have Jackson solved the Civil War?

I also guarantee you that he genuinely thinks he is facing the most greatest challenges the president has ever faced in the history of the country (with a few exceptions). And in that case, he might actually be right, although the problems start a lot closer to home than he'll ever realize.

You know how unknowing keeps mentioning how people in the USA voted for Trump mainly because they thought of him like a sitcom character?

I have come to realize just how much it sucks to be in a sitcom when you're not one of the main characters with plot armor. I feel like one of those extras in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Shit, Trump reminds me of Dennis now that I think about it.

[up][up] it can be Always Sunny thou, because that show is at least Aware that their protagonists are sociopaths, and nothing good ever really comes to them. Its actually a very optimistic series.

unlike Real Life, whose writer is having some serious issues, if the last few seasons are any indication

[up] TBF. nothing really bad happens to them either. At least, nothing long-lasting. Which is why they haven't learned a damn thing even as they ruin the lives of others around them.

Yeah, their schemes fail, but they're not crippling failures and they're always ready to try something new. Like Trump and his damn steaks and vodka.

[up][up][up][up]to explain this better, Trump suporter have what I call the house-harper phenomenon, were people love a jerk chararter because they see him as right, house popularized the whole "jerk who is not a jerk because he is right" and Charlie harper from two and half men used the whole WINNING! Meme long before del donald rise is ugly Head.

So Trump is not just a sitcom protagonist, he is a Damn jerk sue, and we are in the míddle of second season.

CenturyEye's post on the previous page about the militia groups is...rather worrying. Many have rightly pointed out that Trump is not the cause, merely the symptom, and that even once he is gone the people who supported him and the things that helped create their mindsets and movements will still be there. But if him not fulfilling his promises, or getting impeached, could make them go crazy sooner rather than later...

Re: Mueller, I was under the impression Trump can't fire him. Instead he would either have to get Rosenstein to fire him, or fire Rosenstein and replace him with someone who will fire Mueller. Either of these would be as bad for him, what with how it would look right after Comey and how hard it would be to find someone willing to replace Rosenstein if it came to it. Doesn't mean he wouldn't still try it though.
