Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

In this case Ivanka and Eric are probably hip deep in whatever Trump is or has been doing so... yeah. But yeah, for all that the right did what they did in regards to the Obama and Clinton children, I think the general consensus is that you're not supposed to trash talk a president's minor children. It's a cheap ass punch that makes you look bad.
Also Tiffany is such a non-entity I think people kind of forget she exists. Does she even really spend that much time with her father's side of the family?

Rich people, I'd imagine. Or at least someone who enjoys flaunting their wealth.
Which Trump absolutely does, so...

Oh God! Natural light!Just want to fact-check something about the Paris Accords that was posted in another thread
.
Is this true, or a misunderstanding of the facts?
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. One, the Paris Accord is 100% nonbinding, so the idea that it forces anyone to do anything is wrong from the outset.
Two, each country sets its own goals, so if America is reducing its pollution levels and China is merely reducing the growth of theirs, that's because that's what America and China each decided that that's what they were going to do, not because anyone is cracking down hard on America but giving China a pass.
Three, there are provisions for wealthier countries to give money to a fund that helps poorer countries develop cleaner industry instead of using cheaper, older, dirtier technology. I don't actually know the ratio of who is donating how much, but again, it's entirely nonbinding, so the US could say "we're sticking to our pollution target but skimping on donations" and there's nothing anyone could do about it.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()
Really, the only thing the Paris Accords really does is say "Hey, we agree that climate change is a problem, so we're going to try to cooperate with the rest of the world to deal with it. We're all in this together!"
Backing out of it sent a really bad message.

Disgusted, but not surprisedTwo
articles

Double post for something completely different:
Georgia GOP candidate poses with controversial militia at anti-Sharia rally
State Sen. Michael Williams posed with members of the Georgia Security Force III% militia after the Piedmont Park event, where he urged voters to “unite” against Shariah law.
The photograph triggered a torrent of tweets, many of them questioning whether members of the group were flashing a white supremacist sign. Others said the three-finger symbol was the sign of the militia, which holds that only 3 percent of colonists fought in the Revolutionary War.
Williams, a Cumming entrepreneur, formally entered the governor’s race earlier this month on a pro-Trump platform that includes a promise to expand gun rights. His spokesman Seth Weathers said the militia’s members asked for a picture after his remarks, and he agreed because they looked like “pro-gun supporters.”
“We don’t know about the supposed symbolism, only that a bunch of liberal hate groups were online tweeting about it,” said Weathers. “This is the stupidest thing in the world – that we are debating whether grown men were supposedly holding their fingers the wrong way during a photo.”
The Southern Poverty Law Center and other groups tweeted pictures of Williams with the members of the militia, whose leader Chris Hill sought to block construction of a mosque in Newton County last year. They quickly attracted hundreds of retweets and comments.
The rally was part of a string of nationwide protests against Shariah law organized by ACT for America, which calls Islamic tenets incompatible with Western democracy. The Southern Poverty Law Center defines the organization as an anti-Muslim hate group.
The militia, which trains in the north Georgia woods, has received a sweep of attention for involvement in protests against the mosque and in support of the Confederate battle flag. The New York Times in 2016 quoted Mark Pitcavage of the Anti-Defamation League saying the militia is notable for its acute Islamophobia.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesThese groups claim they're not anti-Muslim, just anti-Sharia, but I don't believe them. At any rate, all these protests send a message of intimidation to law-abiding Muslims, whether they intend it or not.
EDIT:
To be fair, there are also plenty of comments in that article which recognize the danger of these militia groups, the reverse (Christian-favoring law in what's supposed to be separation of church and state) and the Trump administration.

No, that's a fair summary of what the military is saying, which I feel is wrong headed and a horrible blind spot that the military has, but the point that still, after 5 months, not only can Trump not keep a message consistent with his top ambassadors and spokes people, but he doesn't have a plan for an ongoing war. I mean, if you elected a third grader I'm pretty sure they'd work on some type of plan in the 2 and a half month gap between election and taking office, not to mention the five additional months since. How does somebody just not give any thought to an ongoing war? How does a party not get their president to do so?
Trump the conman and carnival barker showing his true colors again. And people are dying because of it at this very moment.

Also good news for you U.K. Folks, trump's state visit us postponed until further notice.

Not really, I don't see oversight mentioned there at all. What they're saying is that with proper money and troop numbers they could win, in the end that's true, one of the best ways to run counterinsurgency is to flood the areas with troops so as to provide stabilisation.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranTheresa May's office is denying that Trump wanted to have the UK trip postponed
The paper, citing an unnamed adviser at May's Downing Street office who was in the room at the time, reported Trump had told May by telephone in recent weeks that he did not want to come if there were likely to be large-scale protests.
"We aren’t going to comment on speculation about the contents of private phone conversations," a spokeswoman for May's office said. "The queen extended an invitation to President Trump to visit the UK and there is no change to those plans."
The White House had no immediate comment on the report.
No date has been set for the visit, which was agreed during May's visit to Washington in January, but British media had reported it was planned for October.
So it turns out that Perry is really enjoying leading the Department of Energy and is enthusiastically defending it
, truly this timeline is bizarre.

As noted, children are not responsible for the actions of their parents. The Trump kids should not be held responsible for what their father does.
They should, however, be held responsible for what they do, which is why Eric and Ivanka are deserving of all the criticism they receive.
