Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Again, especially in the U.S, I wouldn't dare to say it's Trump's charisma or wile that got him the election. Again, remember the U.S votes are basically like this:
Out of 100%, 40% can't be arsed to vote.
Out of the remaining 60%, about 25% will, regardless of anything, vote Democrat. Out of the remaining 35%, about 25% will, regardless of anything, vote Republican.
The remaining 10% will decide the election, and that's about uh. 25 million people, of voting age population that decide each election.
To put it in perspective, that's the amount of twitter followers the NBA or Emma Watson has, it's the amount of subscribers Youtube Spotlight, the official Youtube Youtube channel has. It sounds like a huge number but comparatively? It's basically a cointoss for a country of 250,056,000 voting age population.
So basically 300 million people let 25 million people decide their fate because of stupid partisanship and the edgelordiness of "haha I don't vote lol"

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesSomeone is comparing Trump's behaviour towards Comey in their meetings to sexual harassment
. Add to this Trump's penchant for unsolicited hugs. Any ideas on this? I think it makes sense.
x4 You mean the voter suppression laws and tactics that Multiple Courts are striking in Multiple States? Including the Supreme Court that just struck down 2 (one Unanimously) Gerrymandering Cases from North Carolina (I think it was NC)? While I would worry about them, it appears that they are being picked apart and destroyed, and they may become a minimal problem in certain states in 2020.

Trump winning in 2020 isn't the worst thing ever.
The worst thing ever is Trump being stupid enough to start a nuclear war.
I've been saying since the primaries that Trump's playbook for politics is the exact same one he uses to pick up women. The entire MAGA campaign was rooted in negging America into bed with him.
We see it in the way his opinion of a person changes based entirely on how much they support his policies too. If you're willing to get into bed with him politically, you're beautiful and smart and witty and he always liked you. If you point out that his latest policy reads like it was written by a drunk monkey, then you're an ugly ho and probably a lesbian and he never liked you anyway.

x5 Remember, the darkest of times call for the sunniest of smiles. Don't give up just yet.
Look at what Trump has accomplished: making the country care about Climate Change, people holding their elected officials accountable, made people realize that their voice can make a difference, giving people a crash course in Civic responsibility, to name a few.
I know it's easy to give up, to say it's hopeless so why bother, but attitudes like that are self fulfilling prophecies.
Oh look, Trumps choice for FBI director may have ties to, you guessed it, Russia!

- All Committee Republicans took Comey's word.
- The FBI brass decided Sessions could not participate or receive intel from the probe based on classified intel.
- Trump is under investigation for obstruction of justice by Mueller
- Comey told Trump Trump wasn't under counter-intelligence investigation, but that could change.
- Trump never talked with Comey about stopping Russian hacking, nor expressed any concern over it.
- Comey took on-site notes about Trump's obstruction, and calls for Trump to release any tapes.
- As of the day Comey was fired, the FBI does not know whether Trump actually colluded with the Russians.
- Lawyer Comey is concerned over Sessions' continued involvement with the probe despite his recusal.
- Comey was convinced Trump was a liar during their first meeting.
- Trump told no one he was going to obstruct the probe.
- Sessions refused to act when asked by Comey to keep Trump away from him and the probe.
- Comey has an ironclad memory of these events.
- Comey repeatedly accused Trump of being a liar and of persistent defamation.
- There is substantial evidence other witnesses, Kushner, Priebus, and Sessions, knew Trump was acting inappropriately.
- Trump has an obsession with the hooker allegation from the dossier.
- Comey thought Trump wanted to, in Comey's own words, "infect" a major FBI investigation.
- Comey thought Trump wanted Comey to drop the Flynn case and take it as an order.
- Trump has only ever asked about one FBI case, the one into his own.
- Trump lied about the loyalty oath on national TV. Comey specifically compares it to Clinton lying about having sex with Lewinsky and say what Trump lied about was far bigger.
- Trump's own tweets, specifically the "witness tampering" one, lead to a special Department of Justice council being formed.
- The Steele Dossier is under investigation by the FBI.
It won't happen, but it would be kind of funny if Comey ended up getting Trump impeached, considering his last minute investigation back in the fall probably influenced the election.

He's already doing it. "Democrat obstruction", anyone? Like we actually have the power to obstruct anything.
