Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

What bothers me about the whole story is not the question how one should interpret the "hope" but the very fact that Trump fired Comey and then stated on tape that he did so because of the Russia investigation. There you have it: Obstruction of justice. What Comey is saying is just underlining this simple fact, no matter how you interpret it.
As much as I want this Trump asshat to get impeached, I don't think with Republicans standing up for this awful person that they would have the integrity to impeach even if Trump personally hacked and changed the votes that won him the election.
Despite the proof, no Republican politician in the White House has the integrity to say so. Until Trump is out of office, they never will.

And that's exactly the problem. As long as Republicans are in control of Congress Trump will never be impeached or face any charges whatsoever.
It doesn't matter how blatant the evidence is or what they hear in testimony. They simply won't do it.

Oh really when?Pretty much. Trump would have to do something outrageously stupid, like, beating a sack of newborn babies in the white house lawn at a catholic altar while Putin films it for the republicans to consider impeaching him.
And they'd probably be outraged at the fact he did it in a catholic altar, in that situation.
Only time Trump will see some actual consequences is next year, depending on how votes go.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesYou know how Trump was supposed to be live tweeting during the Comey Senate hearing?
Well, guess what? He hasn't tweeted once the whole time. One of his Aides tweeted "There is no collusion or election fraud!", but that's it.
I think Trump knows that bringing attention to the Comey hearing will show that, while yes, he wasn't under investigation for Russian Collusion then, doesn't mean he's not under Investigation for it anymore, on top of Comey basically saying "Yeah, Trump attempted to Obstruct Justice"...
It is still up. You can watch it here:

It's still going on right now, but we're at least an hour in, and Trump has remained deafly silent. And even though Comey is slightly downplaying it, he is basically saying that Trump was trying to Obstruct Justice, at least when it came to Flynn. I've been watching it here.

They are running in circles...they keep repeating what was already in the testimony, with the Republicans putting emphasis on "Trump wasn't under investigation at this point", "he said "hope"" and "why didn't you say something back then". As soon as a really interesting question is asked, mainly everything related to the Russian investigation, he says that he can only reveal this in a closed setting.
There is also the fact that he has a meeting with the Faith and Freedom Caucus's in 15 minutes...
Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) tried to say "Well, you could've created a Special Counsul against Dem. Candidate Clinton about her Emails", and Comey basically said "I could've, but there was no case against her, so instead, I made the call to drop the investigation".
If only he hadn't done that stupid October Surprise BS, all this could've been avoided.
Oof, McCain seems to be getting a little out of it, calling "Trump" "Comey" a few times during his questioning, and he seems to be confusing the Clinton email investigation with the Russian investigation.
I don't think it's necessarily malicious, it's just... well, possibly senility at this point.

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Mc Cain is slime! What is so difficult to understand about the E-mail investigation being one matter and the Russia investigation being another matter, even if they are connected. What, does he think that Clinton should be investigated just in case she sabotaged her own campaign????? There is no double standard.

I liked a comment I saw. It said that Comey isn't burying Trump, but he is digging a Trump sized hole.
And considering that Trump simply cannot let things go, he'll probably jump in after hiring heavy equipment to make it yuge.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.
