Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

That only happens if increasing the labor cost of a product cause a 1:1 rise in the increase of the total cost. Which basically never happens, given that there are a lot of other factors in the final price. Increasing the minimum wage by X% might not result in a full X% increase in purchasing power, but it's not going to do nothing either.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.![]()
Funny thing is it never seems to work out that way, because the increased buying power of the population makes up for the loss in profit margin because people can now buy more stuff. Rather than gouging one person for 30% profit, you can now gouge two people for 25%.

Note that the "common arguments" against minimum wage increases are almost always disingenuous, because when you cite actual evidence that they work as intended, you get a lot of Moving the Goalposts.

But as Jim Sterling (son!) once put it

"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"... So nobody is interested in the possibility that Russia may have instigated the currrent feud in the Arabian Peninsula just to muck up the American government's interests in said region? Qatar hosts an American base that is important for aerial operations against Daesh, after all.

Any unhealthier than reading Trump's tweets?
Kanasas legislature finally overrides
Brownbacks veto, dismantling some of the tax cuts and spending cuts he made the center of his conservative doctrine.
And several bars actually plan to open early, so you can drink Russian Vodka and eat FBI sandwiches, while watching the Comey testimony. This has the list.

I can't believe I use to like Bill Maher
Some keynotes: He wants to rescue Milo Yiannopoulos from his banishment
He wants to get rid of polio vaccines, despite him getting one, because polio has been going.
He thinks he, and no one else, will catch flack if he dates a woman much younger than him
Views on Islam. LOL
He's open minded about Le Pen

Bill Maher is a classic example of someone on the left who has a great number of character flaws yet still makes a great deal of sense when he talks. His attitude on Islam is regrettable, but he's one of those militantly outspoken voices that are going to trip on themselves from time to time.
I find myself agreeing with most of what he says and then he goes into something that makes say, "Huh?" I wonder if he's consciously trying to ape Bill O'Reilly.

Although, the problem with a higher minimum wage, can be if companies increase their prices to keep the margin of profit the same, the people will be stuck in the same situation, with a higher minimum wage but decreased purchasing power. But that's not why she's objecting is it.
