The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Minor Correction: The Animated Special (not the Movie) still has the line in it, it's the book that has removed the line as Lake Eerie gets better.

Lake Erie, particularly near Cleveland and other industrial areas is still not great, but it is much better than it ever was in the 70s or so. You can actually swim in some parts now, such as vermillion or the Erie Peninsula.

Ah yes, Lake Eerie. Truly Cleveland's greatest attraction. Where else can you have a bonfire on a lake?tongue

The USA is "lucky" that something like that prompted environmental legislation before things got to the point that people are dying due to polluted air and water. Unlike countries like say, China and India.

Money isn't the only reason China is looking into renewables and going along with the Paris accords.

[up][up][up]A lot of Trump's policies, such as they are, are standard Republican policies at this point. But Trump has no filter and the thinnest skin imaginable, so he's much more obvious. Plus, he's desperate for attention, and throws tantrums when he doesn't get his way, so the spotlight is constantly on him. Also, he lost the popular vote, so a lot of people were aware of him already.

Virginia, Deleware, and Puerto Rico have also joined the Climate Alliance.

The member states, which make up 31.4% of the U.S. population and 36.3% of U.S. GDP as of 2016, emitted 18.1% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions in 2014.

Is there any possibility that Texas might join the alliance? You're probably going to say 'not in a million years', but I thought I should ask since I've been getting surprisingly mixed signals on Texas' allegiance to Trump (which, admittedly, may be anecdotal).

Honestly at this point I'm inclined to think In Mysterious Ways is in play.

Virginia joined the climate alliance? Woohoo! Glad my home state is good for something.

[down] the amount of confederate whitewashing that led to this needing to be written...speaking of Virginia, there are many high schools named after him here.

Got around to RTFA on the election hacking.

Apparently the access to the voter database is believed to have been a Russian attempt to disenfranchise Democrat voters - CrossCheck implementation in several states will deregister voters for the slightest profile discrepancy.

The latter part did happen, though.

Ideally someone other than The Intercept should do further corroboration or investigation, since the leaker got busted in an awful hurry...

Anyway, we saw how spitefull trump really is, is there any other insult he feel the need to avenge a this rate?
