Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Any time you find yourself thinking that there is no way American Conservatives could be that petty, just remember that time we tried to punish France for not supporting the Iraq War by insisting that all fries would no longer be known as french fries, but would instead be freedom fries.
That insipid, stupid, pointless act of pure spite was basically the harbinger of things to come. That went nowhere. Because it was stupid. France didn't give one solitary shit about what we label our greasy potato products, and everyone who wasn't super-conservative wasn't willing to use that dumbass label.
But things are different now, because the kind of idiot who came up with Freedom Fries is now sitting in power.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Luigisan, forgive me for saying this, but your persistence in being The Pollyanna despite everything that has happened and continues to happen, as well as criticizing people for being "all doom-y doom-sayers", is becoming very grating. You're coming across as wilfully in denial about how dire things are at this point.

The fact that he has power at all is a field in which we failed to stop him. Not "haven't stopped him yet", not "currently failing to stop him". I mean "failed", past tense, and no undoing it without a Cosmic Retcon or sending a Schwarzenegger-robot back in time to Ret-Gone him.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryQuite. The ship has sailed on stopping him. What we're doing now is damage control.

Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. While Luigi underrating the gravity of the situation does get a bit grating, the atmosphere here often does leave me wondering why some people bothering keeping up with anything if the attitude is just "everything sucks, everything is probably going to keep sucking, pessimism forever", and I understand also finding that a bit grating. Especially when it seems like some people only comment to do so without really adding anything else.

You know what guys? Regardless of what you could say to me, I will keep with my optimism for future as long as people are there to exist that will make, something that you don't see because you're getting overwhelmed with despair and what I do is healthier instead of being consumed by negative thoughts. Therefore, for anyone who is in danger for anything they care about, salvation will come in one way or another instead of expecting death or despair for the long run.
I'm not in denial, I'm just the man who doesn't expects the worst unlike you.

The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Last time I posted around here was the 2016 election result, but now I feel like asking. I'm certain someone's asked this before and there's probably no conclusive answer, but how popular is the Trump administration with the people, anyways? Like, are there at least any hard numbers on his popularity, especially with people who voted for him to start with?
I already know he lost the popular vote to Hillary back in the election, but it seems to me that it's gotten even worse for him since then, losing the respect of his more 'moderate' voters (that is, the people who voted for him that aren't a part of his die-hard fanbase, and probably had some kind of contextual or tactical reason for doing so) and fellow republicans. The key word being 'seems'.
I don't know if I should trust this perception since I live in a Middle-Class, largely Pro-EU environment in the UK and pretty much everyone hates him, and even those who don't hate him will at least admit he's a bit of an idiot.
But from where I am, the American people in general seem very politically savvy (which comes as no surprise), especially the media, and it seems like everyone is watching what Trump is doing like they're watching some kind of bad political thriller, eating popcorn and riffing on the overuse of all the 'seizure-of-power' tropes.

I have my reservations about the American media being politically savvy
.
According to Mike Pence, climate change is only an issue for the left throughout the world
. Where was that weird French quiz that stopped short of actually calling me a Trot to my face again?
I'm neither an optimist nor a pessimist (i.e. I'm a realist), and firmly believe that ideally speaking, neither of them have a place when it comes to such a serious matter. However, IMO pessimism is considerably preferable to the former in such a situation, as it makes it more likely for a person to be Properly Paranoid and thus not get caught by surprise, and also it becomes harder for said person to hit the Despair Event Horizon.
There's not giving in, and there's Wide-Eyed Idealism.

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. But unfortunately, this attitude reveals another problem, and one that likely doesn't concern just Americans: the desire for hands-off democracy.
For a lot of people, we shouldn't have to know who is the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, let alone his daily movements.
We should just wind the government up every four years, let it do its thing, and then wind it up again. But when it starts whirring and sputtering after a few years, and then ultimately explodes into flames, maybe we should have taken a closer look at it.

Wait, this is what the freedom fries are about? That is even more stupid than the American flags in the Spider-man trilogy.....
If this is a reality show, this would be the final season.
BTW, if they ever do make a movie or TV show about all of this, I hope that they make Trump a side character in it. Because it would be the biggest insult to him to see what is happened through the eye if someone he really despises.

Eerily, I remember their being a mashup of the Corrupt Corporate Executive in Dinosaurs and some of Trump's quotes, and it was genuinely hard to tell them apart.
