Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Asgore Adopts Noelle
Not surprised there aren't any Alabama Cities on that list, but I am slightly surprised neither Annapolis nor Baltimore are there.
According to CNN a bunch of other governors have spoken out in favor of the agreement but iirc it's only CA/WA/NY who are in a formal alliance over it.
The other governors who have spoken out in favor of the deal barring Brown, Cuomo and Inslee (not sure how they've responded to the actual announcement) are:
Baker (MA)
Brown (OR)
Hickenlooper (CO)
Ige (HI)
Malloy (CT)
Mc Auliffe (VA)
Raimondo (RI)

Of note is Micheal Bloomberg's plan to coordinate an alliance to submit a plan to the UN as a group committed to act according to the agreement. "We're going to do everything America would have done if it stayed committed" said Bloomberg.

Considering he has pissed off a lot of them, fat chance of that happening...

I think the only reason why Trump did it because this is the one campaign promise which is easy to keep. Who cares that it will help the coal miners not one little bit.
I wouldn't put too much stock into Russia signing. I don't think that Putin really beliefs in it or intends to honour the agreement. He has said multiple times that the warmer climate is a good thing because it means milder weather in the northern region, as well as an easier time to get to oil and other resources which are currently under a lot of ice. But he isn't stupid. He knows that if everyone signs, he better signs too, or Russia will get singled out the way the US is experiencing it now. In order for him to actually do something, the rest of the world has to pull in the right direction. That is why Germany, France and Italy have announced that they have already made plans to encourage other countries to do so. That's what the recent meeting with India was about (the one with China happens every year, there Merkel has done her best to convince for years by now).
And yes, clean energy is a problem in Germany, mostly because the scientists still haven't find a real solution to saving energy for the times when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. Without nuclear energy, something has to provide the energy during the night. But there are possible projects and ideas.
Btw, looking at Trump I am getting more and more happy with the election system we have in Germany...due to there being multiple parties in the government, Trump would have been just voted out months ago. Hell, he wouldn't have been able to be chancellor in the first place, because he wouldn't have managed to built a coalition.
