Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up] Not surprised there aren't any Alabama Cities on that list, but I am slightly surprised neither Annapolis nor Baltimore are there.

Are any entire states planning to stick to the deal anyway?

Ones you'd expect, but with large populations, so still good.

Is it wrong that I'm half expecting Republicans to try and punish these cities for keeping to the agreement.

Oh really when?

I don't know if massachuetts has formally pledged, but renewables are big here, on the drive into Boston, there are two solar farms and encourage rooftop solar, and have several windmills.

Americans are so contrarian that the harder they push against it, the more people will care.

According to CNN a bunch of other governors have spoken out in favor of the agreement but iirc it's only CA/WA/NY who are in a formal alliance over it.

The other governors who have spoken out in favor of the deal barring Brown, Cuomo and Inslee (not sure how they've responded to the actual announcement) are:

Baker (MA)

Brown (OR)

Hickenlooper (CO)

Ige (HI)

Malloy (CT)

Mc Auliffe (VA)

Raimondo (RI)

I mean, just look what they tried to do in some cities that raised the minimal wage. Local government power is only good if it's doing things they agree with.

still many of the largest cities are in democratic lead states and should be fine. The ones I'm worried about are the smaller red state cities. They tend to have less leverage then even the large red state cities, and can be pushed around more easily.

[up][up][up] Still surprised at the silence from my home state. Must be because of the Governor, Larry Hogan. Well, he'll most likely be voted out in 2018 anyways, because Maryland is a Liberal Haven.

So Washington, California and New York have formed an alliance to combat Climate Change.

They call it the USCA. The United States Climate Alliance.]]

Is this the beginning of a proto-country

“I am proud to stand with other governors as we make sure that the inaction in D.C. is met by an equal force of action from the states. Today’s announcement by the president leaves the full responsibility of climate action on states and cities throughout our nation. While the president’s actions are a shameful rebuke to the work needed to protect our planet for our children and grandchildren, states have been and will continue to step up.”- Washington Governor Jay Inslee

“The White House’s reckless decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement has devastating repercussions not only for the United States, but for our planet. This administration is abdicating its leadership and taking a backseat to other countries in the global fight against climate change, New York State is committed to meeting the standards set forth in the Paris Accord regardless of Washington’s irresponsible actions. We will not ignore the science and reality of climate change which is why I am also signing an Executive Order confirming New York’s leadership role in protecting our citizens, our environment, and our planet.-New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

“The President has already said climate change is a hoax, which is the exact opposite of virtually all scientific and worldwide opinion, I don't believe fighting reality is a good strategy - not for America, not for anybody. If the President is going to be AWOL in this profoundly important human endeavor, then California and other states will step up.” -California Governor Jerry Brown

Emmanuel Macron also invited American scientists and entrepreneurs to come work in France. "To all the scientists, entrepreneurs, engaged citicizens that were disappointed by the US president's decision," he assured them that they would "in France, find a second nation." "I am calling you: come work here, with us, on concrete solutions about climate," he added. "Tonight, America has turned its back on America, but France will never turn its back on Americans," Emmanuel Macron added.

Macron holy fuck.

Balls of goddamn adamantium.

NYT: Bucking Trump, These Cities, States, and Companies Commit to Paris Accord

Of note is Micheal Bloomberg's plan to coordinate an alliance to submit a plan to the UN as a group committed to act according to the agreement. "We're going to do everything America would have done if it stayed committed" said Bloomberg.

I wouldn't be so sure. I don't know enough about the positions of the justices, but if enough of them prefer supporting the power of the executive, then it's game over man.

I think the only reason why Trump did it because this is the one campaign promise which is easy to keep. Who cares that it will help the coal miners not one little bit.

I wouldn't put too much stock into Russia signing. I don't think that Putin really beliefs in it or intends to honour the agreement. He has said multiple times that the warmer climate is a good thing because it means milder weather in the northern region, as well as an easier time to get to oil and other resources which are currently under a lot of ice. But he isn't stupid. He knows that if everyone signs, he better signs too, or Russia will get singled out the way the US is experiencing it now. In order for him to actually do something, the rest of the world has to pull in the right direction. That is why Germany, France and Italy have announced that they have already made plans to encourage other countries to do so. That's what the recent meeting with India was about (the one with China happens every year, there Merkel has done her best to convince for years by now).

And yes, clean energy is a problem in Germany, mostly because the scientists still haven't find a real solution to saving energy for the times when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow. Without nuclear energy, something has to provide the energy during the night. But there are possible projects and ideas.

Btw, looking at Trump I am getting more and more happy with the election system we have in Germany...due to there being multiple parties in the government, Trump would have been just voted out months ago. Hell, he wouldn't have been able to be chancellor in the first place, because he wouldn't have managed to built a coalition.

A Politico article on how the withdrawal from Paris was done solely to troll the world also pointed out a logical fallacy that I'm disappointed I didn't notice sooner:

The entire debate over Paris has twisted Republicans in knots. They used to argue against climate action in the U.S. by pointing out that it wouldn’t bind China and other developing-world emitters; then they argued that Paris wouldn’t really bind the developing world, either, but somehow would bind the United States.
