Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I mean, Trump is constantly doing things that make all but his hardest supporters shudder. Honestly, this time the issue was more about who he was up against more than people actually wanting him. Most of that wasn't Hilary's fault, but it was what it was.
Unless his next opponent has as much baggage as her, I'd say you should be cautiously optimistic about Trump being soundly beaten. Cautiously, because again, anything can happen.
That's nowhere near what only counts. Even then his approval among Republican has been falling too.

It's hard to know what chance he has of winning re-election, because what matters to answering that question is 'how popular will he be 3 years from now?'
If the past few months are a good blueprint for the next few years, he'll lose, unless the game has been rigged too heavily in his favour. But it's easy to imagine that's not how it'll go. Worst case scenario is another 9/11 happens and the country rallies to him.
What on earth are you talking about? Republicans are the least important block when it comes to Trump, there aren't enough Republicans (or Democrats) to decide an election one way, you have to win over independents (be they true independents or ones that lean a particular way) and Trump is doing terribly amongst them, hell the strength of his support amongst Republicans is dropping.
The thing is we have no idea if any of this will hold three years from now. So it's impossible to tell if he will get reelected (or even reelected).
We can't even predict this years elections with much certainty, I don't know what by people think we can predict 2020.
“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranI do think that a relatively underexplored demographic is the college educated, socially liberal Republicans, who are disgusted of the current GOP. They are a demographic, that might help push house districts blue or purple, if you push the right issues, and reach out to them.
also does anyone want a list of all the cities that have pledged to uphold the terms of the Paris Agreement so far?

I mean Jesus Christ just look at this shit.
In his worldview (and the base that voted for him), the Paris Agreement was not an global effort to combat a global problem, but a conspiracy meant to undermine US supremacy, with the rest of the world snickering behind our backs as we were willingly duped into signing away our greatness for a hoax like climate change.
And now, with the world saying straight to his face that he's being a fucking idiot, he sits smug and confidant feeling that their condemnation is proof enough that he is doing the right thing.
It ties right back into what we saw during the trip: He doesn't want allies and cooperation. He wants clients and payment.
Question: How is this guy not impeached? He never did a single thing right (that I know of) and all his bills did way worse in action. That should ring bells, but I'm surprised he stayed this long.
And I thought his fabled past deeds (plus him sending death threats(?) to that woman who tried to make him go to court on him raping her but she cancelled the case because of the threats) and the Russian hacking is a huge tell that he shouldn't be President?

I know an article like this is going to be in the minority, but it really points how the Paris Accord has been so overhyped that people have forgotten a lot of crucial flaws.
Also the comment on it being about money really contradicts aspects like the fact that majority companies are in favor of the agreement. In some ways, if they were really being greedy they would follow what the companies are saying to do.
"China’s five-year plan still calls for a nearly 20 percent expansion of its coal production capacity by 2020. India and Japan are following suit. Germany, pace Merkel, produces huge quantities of coal annually, virtually all of it lignite, or brown coal, the dirtiest variety.
Coal from these sources not only produce all the traditional forms of pollution, but also causes ailments ranging from asthma to radiation diseases (from mining rare earths)—making the issue of carbon dioxide emissions an afterthought. Improving the efficiency of coal production will thus yield far greater returns than fine-tuning the production of wind and solar energy"

@Le Garcon: Man, then the Republicans really need to open their eyes to what Trump is doing.
And I thought his fabled past deeds (plus him sending death threats(?) to that woman who tried to make him go to court on him raping her but she cancelled the case because of the threats) and the Russian hacking is a huge tell that he shouldn't be President?
Apparently, far too many people have questionable self-preservation instincts.
It's possible that even some of the people who wanted things that he promised had their instincts' gag reflex triggered by him, but they suppressed them and voted for him anyway.
Do not obey in advance. Also Putin is staying in the Paris Accord. This actually would refute the narrative that Russia is controlling the USA, because if it was then it would be following Trump's lead in leaving. I think the media has this conspiracy of Russians controlling everything to get out of hand and ironically distort what's really going on.
