Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, that's not really a surprise. The GOP's approach the past couple decades has pretty much been "So, what do a majority of the people actually want? Okay, let's prevent that from happening by any means necessary and brainwash them into agreeing with us with incredibly misleading soundbites and deliberately misnaming things."
For those interested, here's the video of the French president addressing American people
— in English.
He notably reiterated his invitation for American scientists wanting to still work on global warming to come to France.
The words "Trump" and "subtle" being in that sentence together feels weird. Like spine-tingling kind of weird.
But yeah, I think he's definitely the kind of guy who would, upon learning that he's going down, would attempt to drag as many other people down with him as possible.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's Dictionary
x5 Tis one thing to check "like" on an opinion poll, but how much people care about Paris can only be judged by their actions (are they going to groan about it then vote GOP in 2018/2020).
@The agreement itself...yeah it says nonbinding but peer pressure works on the int'l level...its codified into law as customary international law rather constantly. (And alot of binding conventions started off as nonbinding agreements/declarations). The signature matters.
@ The Death Knell for America's Global Leadership
Meh, saw this coming. Yet Another Stupid Death but perhaps better than the Visigoths showing up outside the gates of Atlanta. note

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
Makes sense, but its still ambiguous whether the current disapproval indicates more people have reached their last straws (even if this wasn't their single-issue, it on top of everything else) or just shrug. Idle musing: I just wonder if those kind of polls are more revealing or deceptive when presented as they were. note
So said, I have no idea what a poll claiming to show commitment would look like (and one asking respondents to check the issue in importance from 1-5 would certainly not be it).
Inside Trump’s climate decision: After fiery debate, he ‘stayed where he’s always been'
Something caught my eye:
"The Paris pact was a particular passion for Bannon, who spent the past two weeks consumed by the climate deal, including working feverishly from the West Wing after returning early from Trump’s foreign trip, according to two White House officials familiar with the discussions. He pressed his case directly with the president — arguing that the Paris accord was a product of globalism and unpopular with Trump’s base — and also worked with Pruitt to tilt the talks in that direction, providing political ballast to the policy and legal arguments made by others on his side."
FUCKING HELL. Get that traitor out of the White House NOW.
