Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Me neither, I still believe in our capability to set things right, but I feel very miserable right now.
I feel like we need to make it clear that renewable energy is the future of the money and the jobs, and the economic effects of not doing so. Capitalism is responsible for getting us into this mess, and I believe that, with the right pressure, it will be able to take us out.

Depends on your definition of solution, damage has been done and we may have passed the point of no return. No this doesn't mean an extinction event but I doubt the people in the future will appreciate that distinction.

Trump is quickly rocketing up to at least the Top 5, though, if he isn't there already.

That's kind of exactly what it means, actually. The Paris Accord is the alternative. Bush killed the last serious attempt at doing something about climate change, and now Trump's trying to kill the last ditch effort at getting everyone on board before it's too late.
The fact that we we're one Man-child away from making it work is quite frankly inspiring. But we are, unfortunately, one man-child away from making it work.

Not just the Midwest - here in NY State, I just had an hour+ long discussion with a customer (conservative Christian) who's virulently against any semblance of a "One World Government", and will likely greet this news with gratitude that Trump isn't buying into the "lie" that would be enabling it.
That's the thing - he's a very pleasant guy, he just happens to believe strongly in what he believes, up to and including a handful of 9/11 theories (yes, he's also a Truther). No evidence I've brought him on a few subjects have been enough to convince him, just as he likely won't convince me to go back to church. I still enjoy debating him, because it lets me understand his thought process better, like today I learned his main distinction between someone being "pagan" and "god-fearing" (paraphrased) in primitive society is based on whether they worship(ped) creation, or the creator, and that that would be used to determine entrance into Heaven in lieu of exposure to Judaism or Christianity, which is genuinely good to know for future conversations with people holding similar beliefs.

And if you listen carefully you can hear Trump not giving a fuck, I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know/forgot about the council
Or in other words moronic wankers.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangAnd by essentially functioning as Dubya on steroids, his evaluation by history is not going to be kind.
Of course, most of his actions have not actually done anything yet (withdrawing from Paris will take until 2020 for example), but should they get enacted - especially undermining health care - the ramifications will be severe.
It took until Dubya's second term, with the wombo-combo of major foreign failure (Iraq) and domestic failure (Katrina), combined with numerous other failings, and walking out the door during the Recession, to drive home how bad he was.

I feel like when evaluating America's president from best to worst it'd make sense to split them into two groups: The ones before and after America became a world power. With that in mind, while the likes Buchanan, Pierce or Johnson may have been really bad presidents, I'm not at all prepared to say they're "worse" than Trump given the much more limited scale of the damage their actions caused.
So I saw this
which if it's true is very interesting. It would be quite nice if a Democratic challenger could defeat Trump and undo our leaving of the Paris agreement.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangLooking around the articles that are online, I notice that Trump keeps banging on about China. Apparently, the reason why it's such a bad deal for America is because China doesn't have to cut any 'carbon emissions' for 13 years.
For carbon intensity (carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP), the US agreed to a cut of 27% by 2025. China, on the other hand, agreed
to an initial 40-45% cut by 2020 and 60-65% by 2030. These goals are based on their 2005 levels.
So, no, the US doesn't have a 'worse' agreement than China here.
They aren't even legally binding targets anyway. If Trump and the Republicans had wanted to ignore Paris existed, they could have.
We all know this anyway, I just felt like pointing out the numbers, given that Trump seems a little obsessed with China on this subject.
Edit: Stupid typo completely changed the meaning of my post. Corrected now.

Sorry about that. It's a tweet from someone named Brian Deese that says:
Assuming that it's accurate (which may be a big assumption) if the Dems win it could undo Trump's actions in respect to leaving Paris.

Do you highlight everything looking for secret messages?A Dem win in 2020 wouldn't block it, Trump will remain in office until the new president is inaugurated. The exit would be completed by the time a 2020 winner took over.
Now the US could rejoin, hell a Dem win in 2018 could allow the Dems to at least try and legislate the Paris Agrement into force, they'd probably be stopped by a veto but maybe they could override with enough public outcry.
