Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Speaking as an Asian-American who is already a registered citizen in California...that mayor can go screw himself. Positive Discrimination is still discrimination. And "gang candidate"? WITAF?

3 This seems like a really really clumsy attempt at this thing called "diversity." That is just wierd though.
This is an interesting perspective. It suggests that one of the places the democrats should be focusing to win back the house is the moderate Romney voters who voted for Clinton because they were turned off by Trump and the Republicans antics. Generally this means college educated suburban professionals who would normally vote republican, but are alienated by the amount of crazy in the GOP.

Given that I fit some of the criteria of that voting demographic, I think it's probably worth a shot.
As for that one mayor...that's not diversity. It's just selective bigotry mixed with screwed up Positive Discrimination based on stereotypes. Note the "gang candidate" remark concerning a black person.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI'm not sure is this has been mentioned yet, but has anyone heard about the hot water Evergreen State College is getting into? The Flame Wars I'm finding on comment sections on sites like Youtube and Facebook are pretty toxic, to say the least.
I live, like, 10 minutes from Evergreen, so I've been getting quite a few posts about the situation there in my facebook feed from acquaintances who work or attend there, but they all talk about it in terms of immediate familiarity with all the parties involved, so a lot of it just goes right over my head. The gist I've gotten is that there was some kind of event planned having to do with race relations, and one professor said something stupid, and since then has just kept digging the hole deeper.
Trump is expected to announce the withdrawl at 3 PM today.
However, the good news is that even if they do withdraw, it won't happen until November 2020, at the earliest, by which point Trump would be almost out the door (Assuming he doesn't get re-elected). So i'm keeping hopes up that it won't go through.
The US has made big progress on CO 2 (Emissions have fallen by 15% since 2005, including 2% in 2016, while renewable energy increased 7%) and I want it to continue.
Just another day in the life of Jimmy NutrinNigel Farage is a "person of interest" in the FBI investigation into Trump's Russian ties
.
Sources with knowledge of the investigation said the former Ukip leader had raised the interest of FBI investigators because of his relationships with individuals connected to both the Trump campaign and Julian Assange, the Wiki Leaks founder whom Farage visited in March.
Wiki Leaks published troves of hacked emails last year that damaged Hillary Clinton’s campaign and is suspected of having cooperated with Russia through third parties, according to recent congressional testimony by the former CIA director John Brennan, who also said the adamant denials of collusion by Assange and Russia were disingenuous.
Farage has not been accused of wrongdoing and is not a suspect or a target of the US investigation. But being a person of interest means investigators believe he may have information about the acts that are under investigation and he may therefore be subject to their scrutiny.
Sources who spoke to the Guardian said it was Farage’s proximity to people at the heart of the investigation that was being examined as an element in their broader inquiry into how Russia may have worked with Trump campaign officials to influence the US election.
“One of the things the intelligence investigators have been looking at is points of contact and persons involved,” one source said. “If you triangulate Russia, Wiki Leaks, Assange and Trump associates the person who comes up with the most hits is Nigel Farage.
“He’s right in the middle of these relationships. He turns up over and over again. There’s a lot of attention being paid to him.”
The source mentioned Farage’s links with Roger Stone, Trump’s long-time political adviser who has admitted being in contact with Guccifer 2.0, a hacker whom US intelligence agencies believe to be a Kremlin agent.
One day, there is going to be a book written about Putin's secret operation to destabilize the West. It's going to be an amazing read, like a cross between James Bond and John Le Carre.
Can someone tell me who Nigel Farage is?

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. From Politico Magazine: "The Democrat's Secret Weapon: Romney Voters"
That very same thought occured to me last night, actually, because I personally know a few of those people.
"I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." -Thomas Edison

It's also because environmental problems such as air and water pollution have gotten bad enough in China that they can't really pretend they aren't major problems anymore.
And yeah, the potential money they could make in renewables is a factor too. Xi Jinping probably thinks it might be what helps revive China's zombie economy.
