Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Regarding Flynn turning over documents, that's either really good or really bad.
- It's good if he's doing it because the threat of holding him in contempt of court got to him.
- It's bad if he's doing it because the narrowed scope of the request wound up excluding the incriminating stuff, meaning he can now turn over the documents and go, "See? Nothing there! Y'all are barking up the wrong tree!"
Unless they actually find a smoking gun in there, I'm betting on the latter. He's already risked prosecution by blowing off the previous subpoenas, so it's clear at this juncture that he does not respond to threats. It's hard for me to see him suddenly turning around and squealing without being offered anything in return.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Truly, the wisest words he has yet tweeted.
Wonder how long before it's deleted and replaced with something only semi-illegible

A California GOP rep hiding on a roof.
Seeing GOP reps running and hiding from constituents will never stop being funny IMHO.
Disgusted, but not surprised"Covfefe" isn't a matter of proofreading. It's so far from any possible word, except maybe "coffee", and that doesn't really work with the context.
"Despite the constant negative press, coffee"
Covfefe is the result of falling asleep at the Twitter and accidentally sending it, possibly after mashing a few keys.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Because people have wondered if Trump had a stroke or something mid tweet
If he actually is dead how bad will you feel about memeing "covefefe",

That's what I was thinking as well.
Fusion has the hard-hitting question that's on everyone's mind: How do you pronounce it?
- Cov-FEE-fee
- Cov-FEH-fay
- COV-feef
I'm particular to 2.

Apologies for the Huffington Post link:
The Trump administration is apparently planning to roll back birth control coverage.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called the move “sickening.”
“The draft rule announced today attempts to tear away women’s control over their own private health decisions and put that control in the hands of employers and politicians,” she said.

Disgusted, but not surprisedWhat's the point of securing Donald Trump's phone? Trump himself is less secure than an off-the-shelf cell.
The left wing nutters can be pretty dangerous. The German RAF for example was a left wing terrorist group, though their targets were mostly politicians. But in general, they are way less prone to attacking random people, or people in general, than the right wing nutters (for the record, I count Islamic terrorists as rights wing nutters, too), who apparently think that they have the right to randomly kill people. And honestly: Took the US long enough to recognize that this is something they have to deal with. There have so many incidences with anti-state groups and people who just go and randomly attack other people and there never was some kind of acknowledgement that those attacks are a form of terrorism, too.
President Trump decided to withdraw from the Paris Agreement
Covfefefuck me over -.-
Though in more, pragmatic ways, 'details to be determined' is at this point basically Trump speech for 'postponed indefinitely'
Doesn't withdrawing from a Treaty need Senate support anyway?
"You can reply to this Message!"

Actually this guy appears to have had beliefs from all over the spectrum. He not only believed all the right wing conspiracy stuff, he also subscribed to the left-wing lunacy about "the DNC cheated Sanders" etc. His Facebook feed is a nightmare of hard-right, fringe left crazy, with no real unifying factors beyond an undying hatred of basically everyone.
Sample post
.
Before someone feels the need to comment that this guy isn't representative of the Sanders fanbase, I will say that of course he's not. I'd hesitate to say he's even a member of that fanbase. He's not even that representative of the Trump fanbase (though he trends way closer there). He's got the political equivalent of multiple personalities, drawing mostly from the neofascist right, but falling back on leftist conspiracy theories when it helps him justify what appears to be a misanthropic dislike of essentially the entire world.
EDIT: Though to answer the main part of the question, no, there is very little violence on the American left that is comparable to that of the American right. The Unabomber and the Weather Underground are about the only examples I can think of that represent clear, leftist violence in the States, as opposed to countless examples of it from right-wing militia nuts, Klansmen, etc.
