Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

True, but America gave us Trump and The Deep South. I think I'll go with the lesser of two evils personally.
A pretty good break-down of the whole "Nato spending" issue, though what it doesn't really discuss is that there isn't really that much relation between what a country spends on its own military and how much of this spending is actual contribution to NATO. For example when article 5 was triggered, some or the states which provided the most assistance are pretty low on the spending scale, while others which are pretty high on it didn't actually provide any assistance at all.
So, since Memorial Day is/was a thing, I would just like to present everyone with a revelation I had today:
Anyone below the age of sixteen in the United States has never experienced the US in a state of peace.

Still not embarrassing enough to stan billionaires or tech companies.A few decades back, the GOP had to pander to the Evangelical Fundamentalist Christians because they needed the votes. Nowadays, not so much — but they're stuck with them. (Mainly because they refuse to leave, and nobody else wants them.)

This Space Intentionally Left Blank. For the record, international tourism dropping is a bad thing because it affects the economy, not just out of some kind of "we have the best country, everyone loves to visit us" nationalism. I live in Orlando, and international visitors make up a not-inconsiderable part of our economy here — moreso than simple numbers suggest because international travellers tend to spend more per capita than domestic ones. (International travel is more expensive and generally a "bigger deal" than domestic travel, so they tend to stay longer and spend more money when they come.)
It's not going to sink us (Orlando's economy is doing pretty well for a variety of other reasons), but downturns in international tourism are most definitely bad for business.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.President Donald Trump plans on reversing a set of policies softening relations with Cuba
Trump doesn't smoke. And he doesn't drink either, so Cuban rum is out. That just leaves Hookers and Blow.
Only thing that'd be more depressing would be if he were some kind of Drunken Master who'd be a master politician if he worked while drunk.
Sounds like several someones didn't preserve their emails...
Do not obey in advance.Trump singing along to the national anthem at Arlington.
How does a 70 year old man not learn anything about decorum and protocol at public events?!? SMH.

This is slowly changing as second- and third-generation Cuban-Americans increasingly break with their parents and grandparents on the issue. They'd rather see normalized relations between the US and Cuba so that they're allowed to actually go visit family and whatnot that remained behind, rather than having all contact cut off.
Really from Jupiter, but not an alien.Trump shouted at Palestinian leader during meeting
Guess Trump is trying to go for the 0-state solution at this rate.
Illinois house passes automatic voter registration
I hope this gets through. Automatic voter registration really should have been implemented along time ago.

Don't forget that Canada is the spawning ground of the likes of Justin Bieber and Ted Cruz.
Disgusted, but not surprised
