Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

On a different note, I was glancing through 538's approval polls, and I noticed that Truman was rather fairly unpopular in the latter half of his presidency, especially compared to, say, Eisenhower and even LBJ (I won't count Kennedy here, as he never had a second term).
Mind you, I knew that he's been somewhat Vindicated by History, but I forget, why did people dislike him so much? Was it because of the Korean War?

Red Scare China edition (he got flack for "losing" China) and the baiting of a certain Joseph Mc Carthy. He also fired General Mac Arthur because the asshole kept pushing for an invasion of China. Firing a war hero without making sure people knew why it had to happen wasn't good for his approval rating, to put it lightly.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIf Quist does win, combined with the other special election results I think there's at least some merit in discussing whether the red midwestern states might be a vaible place to be looking for states to flip than the south; compared to Ossoff, both Quist (based on preliminary results) and the candidate in the Kanas special election vastly exceeded the anticipated amount of support a democrat in their respective states would get.
That being said, initial results look good for Gianforte, unfortunately, though if the vote is split enough by the libertarian candidate Quist might pull through.

@Gilphon, I'd rather have Quist in the seat voting than Gianfort in the seat voting and occasionally having to say 'no comment' about body-slamming someone. You're acting like him being elected necessitates him explaining or even acknowledging it happening.
Edit: Not to mention, getting to say 'you elected a man who bodyslammed a reporter!' is going to be a pale-ass argument for people who elected a man who brags about sexual assault to be President.

It's been fun.@Truman—For one thing, Truman succeeded FDR, which is a terrible starting point for making your own reputation.
Alot of the rest seemed to be foreign policy. The Korean War (technically accomplishing its initial objectives but looking a draw) happened on his watch, along with the Steel Seizure Incident. Neither looked that great compared to WWII. Of course there was the issue that the PRC came to power in the first place during his term. He didn't have to prevent that (and probably couldn't have) but the did an awful job explaining his strategy. Then there was the red baiting, and his opponents' determined opposition. (We've seen what dedicated opposition campaigns can do in our own time).

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives

Let's let Quist start the Blue Wave! Especially against the Assaulter, Greg Gilanforte.
