The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

At first, I thought this was the same guy who walked out of an interview (when asked about campaign donors) before doing a poorly-received town hall, but actually that was different Rep. from Iowa.

Gee, who knew this whole healthcare thing would be such a touchy subject, and put so many Republicans on edge?

Gianforte's Campaign releases statement on the incident that is wildly different from what has been said and heard.

So that pretty much confirms that an assault did take place. And since Gianforte's words contradict the Audio and Witnesses Testimony completely, it would appear that he is guilty of it.

Also, the Gallatin County Sheriffs are looking into the matter, and are taking witness's statements.

Apparently all pe Francis handed Trump a letter he wrote about climate change in 2015. Subtle.

I feel like this is appropriate. Since we mentioned the official Vatican coloring book and all...

Re: Montana election: In addition to the election being tomorrow, keep in mind that early voting is a thing. So this definitely won't have the impact that it should.

I gave $10 to the Dems after receiving a message about their wanting to raise money for last minute ads in Montana. I think it was probably a ploy and the money won't necessarily go there, but it seemed right to do since I wish I had given some money earlier.

About that Texas guy on the previous page: I'm getting sick of that argument of "We're so politically correct that we're letting terrorists walk all over us". Besides that this is often used as an excuse to be an oppressive asshole, why is the argument framed that we have to choose between one or the other? We can protect ourselves against terrorists without buying into Islamophobia/bigotry, walls that do nothing, bans of entire groups of people, and blanket mass surveillance.

That's consistently the main argument I see from people who are sometimes even well-intentioned, that "political correctness" can cause us to ignore an Awful Truth for fear of being perceived as insensitive or stereotypical.

I understand why that perception exists but the problem is that it comes with a lack of sensitivity and acknowledgment for why the subject in question is so sensitive to begin with. Moreover, you can offer criticisms of broad cultural groups; it just helps to actually be informed and well, tactful when you talk about a controversial or sensitive subject.

On Islamophobia, I think a large part of it is that many people, intentionally or otherwise, don't understand that there's a difference between acknowledging that the vast majority of Muslims are not terrorists and don't approve of terrorism, and saying "no terrorists attacks ever are related to Islam".

I've seen people who seem to assume the former, I feel like they're making some big statement by going "hey, this was related to Islam."

And for funsies, have Fox News corroborating the Guardian reporter's version of events with some lurid detail. Emphasis added.

Faith, Keith and I [Alicia Acuna] arrived early to set up for the interview in a room adjacent to another room where a volunteer BBQ was to take place. As the time for the interview neared, Gianforte came into the room. We exchanged pleasantries and made small talk about restaurants and Bozeman.

During that conversation, another man — who we now know is Ben Jacobs of The Guardian — walked into the room with a voice recorder, put it up to Gianforte's face and began asking if he had a response to the newly released Congressional Budget Office report on the American Health Care Act. Gianforte told him he would get to him later. Jacobs persisted with his question. Gianforte told him to talk to his press guy, Shane Scanlon.

At that point, Gianforte grabbed Jacobs by the neck with both hands and slammed him into the ground behind him. Faith, Keith and I watched in disbelief as Gianforte then began punching the reporter. As Gianforte moved on top of Jacobs, he began yelling something to the effect of, "I'm sick and tired of this!"

Jacobs scrambled to his knees and said something about his glasses being broken. He asked Faith, Keith and myself for our names. In shock, we did not answer. Jacobs then said he wanted the police called and went to leave. Gianforte looked at the three of us and repeatedly apologized. At that point, I told him and Scanlon, who was now present, that we needed a moment. The men then left.

To be clear, at no point did any of us who witnessed this assault see Jacobs show any form of physical aggression toward Gianforte, who left the area after giving statements to local sheriff's deputies.

As for myself and my crew, we are cooperating with local authorities. Gianforte was given a citation for misdemeanor assault and will have to appear in court sometime before June 7.

Indeed. Last minute voters are by default the easily swayed ones seeing as they are the ones most likely to decide at the last minute, as we saw in the 2016 election. Utterly convinced voters vote early.
