Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They tried to migrated to Voat (Reddit but Nazi-er), got insulted to hell and back, other subs just laughed at them included non-political ones, like a Star Wars original trilogy one and another about Sponge Bob Square Pants. They came back a few hours ago, because their tantrum didn't work.
Thanks, guys. I honestly didn't expect more than one or two people to jump at the call. To see five do so is... well, it reinforces my faith in part of the human race.
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.Nah, I feel better now. But thanks for the offer.
For the record, when I said "five", I meant "two who posted their responses in this thread, and three who directly PM'd me instead of leaving a post here".

Black man will spend six years in Georgia prison despite jury finding him 'not guilty'
Ramad Chatman handed himself in to police when he found out he was a suspect for an armed robbery at a convenience store in his hometown of Georgia in July 2014.
"He turned himself in because he knew he was not guilty," his grandmother Janice Chatman told US news channel 11Alive.
The 24-year-old was already was serving a five year probation term (a court order served outside prison through fines and community service) for his first ever offence, breaking and entering an apartment to steal a television worth $120 (£92) in 2012.
Basically, there's nothing linking him to the armed robbery, no evidence of any kind, he voluntarily turned himself in as soon as he heard the police were looking for him, and tried an Alford plea because he expected to be taken down for a crime he didn't commit. Except the jury found him innocent.
The judge has decided to disagree with the jury's verdict and keep him imprisoned, citing a parole violation from his original offence.
An Alford plea means the defendant enters a guilty plea, but maintains his innocence. It is often used when a defendant feels like despite his innocence, he will lose at trial.
The judge refused to accept the deal, so the case was heard before a jury - who ruled he was innocent of the crime.
Presiding Judge John Niedrach, disagreed with their verdict however.
So despite the fact police never recovered the weapon, stolen money, or any other evidence connecting him to the robbery, he declined to release Mr Chatman, who remains in prison for violating the terms of his first probation order.
You say that as if all of those horrible things are mutually exclusive.
Says the judge claimed he believed the witness despite the Jury's verdict and that the witness's claim that he had a gun was valid. Probation hearing was before the jury trial. Sounds like the judge using a loophole to get the defendant imprisoned, as the testimony over the gun is being used separately from the robbery trial (ie, judge saying the trial only declared him not guilty of robbery, not possession, despite the only evidence in this case being an unreliable witness).

Man, wonder if NYT and Wa Po have something up their sleeve for monday?
New Survey coming this weekend! The poorest sections of NC to lose food stamp access
.
The new proposed cut is crafted with love by our dear GOP. Citing the idea that people are somehow abusing them for personal gain, one local GOP leader says "We all know food stamps are abused by many to avoid personal accountability. They need to be taught restraint."
Coupled with a counter-intuitive requirement that you must be employed in NC to receive food stamps if you're single and removal of free lunch programs for children, this is gonna hurt a hell of a lot of poor people
Either that, or they're trying to Kill the Poor via starvation since poor people tend to vote for the Democratic Party.
Cooper seems like a pretty professional guy for the most part, so hearing him say something like that speaks volumes. A real life O.O.C. Is Serious Business moment.
Disgusted, but not surprised

Unsurpringly, r/the_donald is back after the mods made it private for 12 hours. Unsurprisingly the subreddits community flooded other political subreddits bitching about it until then. Which is one of the reasons the reddit admins don't just ban them outright.
