Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

x3 Don't forget those holding key seats in rednote states.
Although, the articles coming out about their (and particularly Bullock's) election strategies make me think that's exactly where we'll find the type suited for addressing the ongoing constitutional crises...

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesLet's see, of those listed, I'd be interested in voting for:
- Biden
- Warren
- Harris
- Murphy
- Klobuchar
- Booker
- Gillibrand
- Castro
- Franken
- Brown (either Sherrod or Jerry)
- Ellison
- Duckworth
I wouldn't be that interested in voting for Sanders, but he's obviously a major contender.
There's some other individuals like Garcetti, who probably have a future, but seem too low level right now.
Of the "celebrity" choices, I'd be most interested in the Rock or Michelle Obama. Zuckerberg's political ambitions should be stopped as soon as possible.
Edit- I remember previously having good vibes toward Deval Patrick but struck him off after seeing he's currently working for Bain Capital. No offense meant to him, but that seems like an instant disqualifier.
Edit 2- Should probably remove Gillibrand for her rather awful past anti-immigrant positions but I give her the benefit of the doubt that her change in opinions is sincere and maybe she could spin it as having seen the light.

If Jerry Brown runs I'd like him to use the song California Über Alles in his campaign (yes, I know it criticizes him, but still, just Quote Mine the lyrics or say it's "ironic").
I really like Franken, although he's probably best where he is right now. He's my current hope for "first Jewish President".
Yeah, I deliberately left her off, although if it was a choice between her and Trump, I'd vote for her. I'd certainly vote for Sanders with 100X more enthusiasm than I would for Gabbard.
Edit- For what it's worth, I'd put Cuomo in almost the same category as Gabbard, just at the other ideological end of the Democratic Party.

Duckworth would be interesting, if only because she's basically impossible to attack without looking really bad. She's an injured veteran who came back after a horrible, impossible to ignore injury and then went on to enter politics and goes way out of her way to engage with her constituents.
She might even be able to use the fact that one of the most effective presidents the US ever had (FDR) was disabled by polio to shut down any attempts to make her look ineffectual.

I could never take Al Franken seriously as a presidential candidate, because I know him best as a comedian who appeared regularly on Saturday Night Live. He also did a spot-on impression of Paul Simon (the politician, not the musician), and being able to mimic a guy who's more boring than Al Gore isn't exactly a point in his favor.
This Space Intentionally Left Blank. The interesting thing about Franken as a candidate is that according to this 538 article
he is one of the people furthest along the steps usually taken when somebody is preparing to announce a presidential campaign. He's tied with Sanders and O'Malley for second (having done 3/7 steps), with Biden as a distant first (5/7, and since the article was written, Biden fulfilled a 6th step on that path).

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVOne of my favorite songs (and I like to take it more of a parody of Republican fear of California). To be fair, the band has taken back their criticism of Jerry Brown saying he wasn't so bad after all and wrote a companion song afterwards about Reagan although they're really into bashing Californiana since they repeat the California Uber Alles and link Reagan to us Californians.
Also come on. Even Garrosh was better than Trump. At least Garrosh had something he wanted to do and kinda did it (Even if it was stupidly evil from beginning to end). Everything Trump attempts is a massive failure. He is more like Gallywix in that everything he does is asshattery but he remains rich after that.

It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothes![]()

Well, there is a trend in US politics of the person who was second in a campaign's primaries being the next front-runner for the party (see: Reagan to Ford, Bush I to Reagan, McCain to Bush II, Hillary to Obama, Romney to McCain*)

They are from California (and I believe Jello Biafra has run for mayor of San Fransisco).
Damn Ninjas
.
*In popular vote, even tough Huckabee won more delegates.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV@wanderer Here's the song.
And the lyrics which sound Trumpian:
I am Emperor Ronald Reagan
Born again with fascist cravings
Still, you make me president
Human rights will soon go 'way
I am now your Shah today
Now I command all of you
Now your gonna pray in school
I'll make sure they're christian too
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Ku Klux Klan will control you
Still you think it's natural
Nigger knockin for the master race
Still you wear a happy face
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Welcome to 1984
Are you ready for the Third World War?!?
You too will meet the secret police
They'll draft you and they'll jail your niece
You'll go quietly to boot camp
They'll shoot you dead, make you a man
Don't worry, it's for a cause
Feeding global corporations' claws
Die on a brand new poison gas
El Salvador or Afghanistan
Making money for President Reagan
And all the friends of President Reagan
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California

Every single election there's concerns about the candidate's health. Is Mc Cain's cheek going to explode with cancer? Is Obama's smoking going to kill him? Is Hillary's fainting a liability?
The U.S has had a poliomyelitic president. Are health concerns an actual thing or are they just seriously silly excuses?

I know the song. And they did one for Schwarzenegger
too.
I'm kind of hoping they do a Trump version. Following the series (California Über Alles, We've Got a Bigger Problem Now, Kali-fornia Über Alles 21st Century) it could be called "We've Got a Yuge Problem Now".

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVMontana Democrat Rob Quist pulls Sander's like Fundraising for House bid: $5 Million in total, but most of the 200,000 donations are less then $25
. By comparison, his Republican Challenger, Greg Gianforte, raised $2 Million from a Super PAC and loaned himself $1 Million.
Combined with his waffling on the AHCA this week, and (apparently) his internal polling showing him down, I think Quist might be the first Democrat to outright win a 2017 Special Election, which would be a good thing.
@wanderer It would be super easy to do.
I am God-Emperor Donald Trump
Business man in a fascist slump.
Still, you losers made me president
Human rights will soon go away
I am now your Tsar today
Now I command all of you
You're gonna build me that Wall
And watch as our economy falls
Donald Trump Uber Alles
Uber Alles Trump
Neo-Nazis will control you
Still you think it's natural
All the poor lose welfare
Only the rich get healthcare
Republicans knockin for the master race
Still you wear a happy face
Donald Trump Uber Alles
Uber Alles Trump
Welcome to 2024
Are you ready for the Third World War?!?
You too will meet the secret police
They'll draft you and deport your brown niece
When they take you to boot camp
They'll shoot you dead, make you a man
Don't worry, it's for a cause
Feeding global corporations' claws
Die on our cheap poison gas
Syria or Afghanistan
Making money for President Trump
And all the friends of President Trump
Donald Trump Uber Alles
Uber Alles Trump
Corporations will control you
Nobody can stop us now
Spray tans for the master race
So you all can have my face.
Close your eyes. Can’t happen here.
Mitch Mc Connell has always been here.
Third Reich won’t come back you say?
Not if Fox News has their way.
Can I grab you by the pussy today?
Donald Trump Uber Alles
Uber Alles Trump
Now it's just like 1984
Knock-knock at your bedroom door.
It’s the homeland security police.
You’re a terrorist and so is your niece!
Drag you secretly to a gulag
Where we put all our minorities
Don’t you worry it’s for a cause:
Feeding you to the alt-right's claws
Donald Trump Uber Alles
Uber Alles Trump
