Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

If you ask me it couldn't really be more obvious Trump didn't REALLY want to be the President and still doesn't want to be, but he's someone with such a monstrously massive, bubble-thin ego and an all-consuming hunger for praise that even the merest iota of a thought of even beginning to consider just resigning means he loses, and that's anathema to him, so he's riding this one out
The only way we'll see Trump leaving is either after he drops dead from stress and paranoia or he's dragged kicking and screaming out of the White House leaving behind a trail of tears and piss.

Was the Washington Post piece about Comey's memos mentioned yet? (I will copy it if not, but want to make sure before I do.)

Too bad his Ironic Hell leaves him in a position of power where he's a constant threat to everyone. Kind of like a Darklord in Ravenloft, except his "realm" is the USA.

Disgusted, but not surprised![]()
I think this our Ironic Hell, given how much do and say what you want, f*** the consequences and the haters, win & get money are essential messages in our culture. We elected our Shadow Archetype / Enemy Without.
Can Trump be sunk?
Thorought his campaign and now thorought his term he has done and said things that would get literally everybody else politically crucified. I'm not talking about just politicians; it feels like anyone trying to pull the shit Trump pulls would be carried out of the White House in a wheelbarrow.
He will not leave out of his volition, GOP has no interest in removing him and Democrats are powerless until '18. Short of actual death, it seems Trump is unsinkable (but that would just make him a martyr, regardless of whether he was assassinated, died in his sleep or choked on food), and while I'm probably mistaken in assuming that, it is simply not looking up too well.
What if he was struck by lightning? Seems like it would be easy to spin that into a Bolt of Divine Retribution.

They said the same about the Titanic and look how it resulted. Uttering the word "unsinkable" might be the biggest attempt of Tempting Fate screwing you harder than it should be.

The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.Catholics in America are just another sign of how religion has polluted American politics. Now, I don't know what the reactions of non-American churches was like, but I do know that, after Obergefell v. Hodges was decided, the leaders of the church I went to basically threw a hissy fit.
If I may ask-why is America unable to separate religion from politics? Even during the Cold War, Europe never went to the extent of making something like "In God We Trust" a motto. And to this day, several states (including the one i live in, Texas) make it outright illegal for an atheist to hold political office. Is Europe's lack of religion in politics and heavy focus on left-wing economics because of the devastation they faced as a result of WWII, while America never had to experience any of that?
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not."Europe isn't a monolith, nor is it's focus on let-wing economic policies tends to be greatly exaggerated from what I can tell. More so than the United States, sure, but they deal with more or less the same issues, with effectiveness in preventing them varying from nation to nation.

Because the first settlers in British America were Puritan hardliners from England who felt that High Church Anglicanism wasn't hardcore Protestant enough for them. The people in America have since changed and most of our values are way more progressive, but the societal detritus from those days never went away. There are more Catholics and different types of Protestants and Muslims and Hindus and more Jews, but the prominent place for religious conservatism that the earliest settlers made was reoccupied by different demographics. Add to that waves of religious revivalism in the 19th and 20th Centuries, and you have the making of a strong religious right. It's the reason our political language has — for better or for worse — a preoccupation with religious freedom.

"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."@Scifi Slasher: Two things-Mccarthy spinning religion into both a partisan political point and a frame of reference to attack 'communists' as part of the Red Scare. The second portion was Nixon's Decapitated Army: after he was removed from office, his coalition started to splinter, and his successors decided to use Roe v Wade as a rallying cry to keep the evangelicals glued to the fiscal deregulators of the GOP proper. Everything that followed the last 40 odd years is the legacy of those two decisions.

Germany is probably what America would be, ideally (although without some of the problems Germany has with the EU and its neighboring countries of course).
It has Universal Health Care, but not single payer.
Strong Unions, but no (explicit nominal at least) minimum wage.
Strong Emphasis on Trades than University
Relatively Affordable Housing as many Germans live in Apartment complexes and not actual houses. Though, depending on who you asked, that may or may not be a good thing. YMMV

New Survey coming this weekend! There's a few reasons. One thing to note is that the US during the Cold War became rabidly anti-Stalinist to the point of adopting religion just to spite him.

Man I wish this had leaked. No wonder her advisors have Undying Loyalty to her.
