The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I love this article. Nothing we don't already know, but it just paints a picture of a miserable paranoid old man, that would actually be kind of sad if he wasn't our POTUS.

He is wounded, offended and convinced that certain forces are working to bring down his presidency. The problem, he has said again and again, is not him or his own actions. It is how he is being treated and received — by the media, by the FBI, by Democrats, by his own staff.

Maybe instead of removing Trump from office, the media and late night comedies can just straight up kill him via stroke or heart attack.

A "what if" that's occurred to me, what if enough evidence piles up that Trump faces impeachment, will he resign a la Nixon or ride it out to the end because resigning or being found guilty in an impeachment means being prosecuted and, more importantly, means failure and losing?

Any thoughts on Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia? He plans to promote moderate Islam there.

Here's the cycle of news for the following year:

Trump does something stupid news calls him out Trump rants against them Fox News and twitter fans defend him Trump points out to them as facts news calls THEM out too Trump holds a press meeting to dispel rumors where stuff is said, but takes no questions Trump does something stupid

Foreign leaders told to praise Trump on election win

Also included. Don't expect Trump to know about your nation's history or current issues and make short presentations because he has a short attention span.

If things go badly for Trump, will Russia still help him and his family like they did when Serbia, back when it was still united with Montenegro, got rid of Slobodan Milosevic and his family, the latter of whom were taken in by Russia?

[up][up]Why would it be fun? The Pope is a powerless figure and no matter what he says it will be predictable, ineffective, and particularly inoffensive

Even the "best case scenario" would be ineffective. The catholic groups of the U.S are quite different from those everywhere else in the world and will easily dismiss the pope's words.

To be honest, I suspect the pope will not get along well with trump. Trump will either spin it as a success or go on record as trashing the pope, and still come out of it unscathed.

And in either way the Pope will be unable to say or do anything.

He is the Pope, he is the figurehead of pretentious neutrality with the effectiveness of a watercress sandwich

[up] Most Catholics voted Trump

As I said before, the Pope has little grasp over the Catholics in the U.S.

What foreign leaders have come up with trump-handling sound uncomfortably like babysitting instructions.
I suppose I should be angry he's shirking part of his duties representing the country because the trip would be long, but I can't say I'm not relieved.
