Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Well, there goes our alliance with Turkey. At least we'll gain a useful ally with the Kurds.
Is it on-topic to discuss the recent incident involving Turkish embassy/security personnel physically assaulting Kurdish/Armenian American protesters in front of said embassy in DC, ahead of a visit by Erdogan
, who has been receiving praise from Dunce-o El Trumpo, and the claims
that it's likely the involved Turkish personnel will get away scot free?

Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus. Please let this man be right...
In a Contest between Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Mike Pence, the Republicans would be smart to put Johnson in instead. Hell, if it was Johnson vs. Trump, it'd still be for the best to put in Johnson.
Now the real question is; would you guys vote for Dwayne Johnson or Tulsi Gabbard? Considering with Trump's victory and terribleness, I've sworn off of ever voting Republicans ever again, I'd vote for the Libertarian (unless he's an out and out Anarchist, then I'd reluctantly vote for Gabbard).
All I know is that getting Trump out of office would do wonders to my sanity, according to my Doctor. Trump and his shenanigans are apparently causing me to have actual panic attacks, (not that I can tell, seeing as I'm mostly calm and collected on a conscious level,) so the sooner we get our Cheeto in Chief out of office, the sooner my subconscious can rest easy.
I was thinking of the Dwayne Johnson question the other night. I definitely would be tempted to vote for him over Gabbard in a general election, but if he was the Republican candidate that would mean "they got to him" and so I wouldn't expect him to actually be true to his formerly moderate and pro-civil rights agenda. In which case Gabbard would be a better choice, since she'd presumably be surrounded by good advisors and make good appointments.
However, if the two were somehow the only candidates in the Democratic Primary by time it came around to Illinois then yeah, I think I'd smell what the Rock was cooking.

@Dingo: Falling out with Turkey was likely to happen anyway since the failed coup. Edrogan literally just pushed through the constituational amendment removing term limits from the presidency, he's been pushing increasingly to align with Islamic fundamentalists, the Kurds are both his biggest political opposition/scapegoats and an oppressed racial minority who came very close to winning signifigant representation in parliment which his party stonewalled them out of to force a new election.
Clinton was also talking up "Kurdish allies" during the election cycle after the coup happened. Had things turned out differently it's possible we'd be talking sanctions on Turkey.
Sigh.
See this is what I meant when I said that the media legitimizing celebrities running for presidency is damaging.
We're actually entertaining the possibility atm.
Besides if we're going to have a celebrity run for president then push Chris Evans.
Then the 2020 election would be MODOK versus Captain America for president.
And that would be insane but we elected Trump so might as well go all in
House may have to vote for the AHCA again because of a procedural quirk.
Since the Bill did not get its CBO score before being voted on, it may not qualify for the Reconciliation Process. It also needs to save the Government at least $2 Billion, although it most likely will as the last draft of the AHCA saved $150 Billion.
Also, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has not even sent the thing to the Senate, because he's waiting for the CBO score.
This'd be one of the greatest comedies of all time if it weren't real life. I should write a Mel Brook's-esque film about this and pitch it in 10 years. It'd make a Billion Dollars.
Thank god someone in the Department of Justice actually cares about Justice!

Trump won't be impeached while the GOP is in control of congress. That means he's secure until at least 2018, if not 2020. Michael Flynn may very well be charged, but Trump himself will be left alone for the foreseeable future. Much of the GOP was prepared to stick with Nixon until the bitter end, and our modern political landscape is far, far more partisan than in the 1970s.

The only way I could see Trump resigning is if he does it like this: "All right, I have been treated VERY unfairly, more than anybody in history, and so go fuck yourself, America. I guess you don't want to get sick of winning. In a month, you'll be BEGGING me to come back."
And all the meanwhile he will tweet nonstop about how he was shafted, the news is fake, and make the occasional potshot at Hillary for no reason.
