Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Asgore Adopts Noelle
... Al Gore's Vice Presidential Pick? Why him?
"I tuned it out," said 44-year-old Michele Velardi, a mother of three sons, during a break from her job at a Staten Island hair salon. "I didn't want to be depressed. I don't want to feel that he's not doing what he said, so I just choose to not listen."
This really stood out to me. One of the 300+ million pillars of democracy embracing willful ignorance, to keep feeling good...
x 4 That sounds like it should be true. Before 2016, I would have agreed with that wholeheartedly. I've gotten considerably more risk-averse these days.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesThe FCC has started the process of repealing Net Neutrality: http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/18/fcc-net-neutrality-rules-238529
An article on Lieberman being a possible pick
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/18/joe-lieberman-fbi-frontrunner-238563
Not sure if I like that. Dude is a peddler of the "video games hurt children" bogus argument if memory serves, with that kind of shallow understanding of "scientific evidence" I am wary what his standard for "criminal evidence" might look like.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanLieberman at one point had a D by his name (he went I). I mostly remember him taking crotechety old guy positions like the original hearings on violence in video games and other family values crap.
But the big red flag is that Liberman is senior council at the law firm that has been representing Trump in civil cases for the last several years.[1]
He might be hoping that his reputation as (former) Democrat blindsides people/makes him look like he's trying to be reasonable.
(Edit to add: the article also mentions he talked up the De Vos nomination with an anti-establishment bent. Whatever good he might have done in the past (he sponsored the repeal of DADT) he isn't showing himself as trustworthy now.)

She said that the AHCA does not meet the needs of people in this state (Alaska), but she seems optimistic that the Senate will adjust the bill. She wants to retain several aspects of Obamacare (funding for Planned Parenthood, coverage for those with preexisting conditions, continued support for Medicaid expansion, and coverage for dependents with no lifetime limits), but she wishes to repeal and reform Obamacare. I'm not remiss to it being improved with fewer costs and broader coverage, TBH.
I'm not sure how much she can do since she's just one person, but I'll support her as long as she still acts in Alaskans' interests.
Do not obey in advance.@Beary Scary: Ok, Thanks.
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVAlso, they don't care what people think about the Net Neutrality repeal anyways. They dismissed all the comments on the FCC's website which crashed it as "a bombardment of malicious traffic" and said during a live stream "OUR RULEMAKING PROCEEDING IS NOT DECIDED LIKE A "DANCING WITH THE STARS" CONTEST, SINCE COUNTS OF COMMENTS SUBMITTED HAVE ONLY SO MUCH VALUE".

The assignment of a special prosecutor might mean the House committee won't get to hear Comey testify
First
- Don't forget the states: Several—even red ones—are considering their own net neutrality rules—so the same write your rep thing applies.
- And what TAP said about the municipality
- Agencies are obligated not to act arbitrarily (and capriciously).
- So, Pai has to get a counselor from an agency that probably hates him and his boss to come up with a crackerjack reason why for his reversal of treating IS Ps as utilities—after the issue was settled in court last year. (My boss changed isn't a good enough reason to change a rule you brought before the courts)
- The 1.6 million+ public comments mean alot more than nothing. The facts of the public's complaints have to be addressed, especially if Pai's FCC goes against the weight of opinion. (Depending on how many comment and what they bring and how many and who threaten to sue, this can take a long time).
- Not to say a court case would stop this, but it may tie Pai up until well after 2020. (The FDA has taken 7 years plus to pass rules and maybe Indivisible or another group already has someone looking at that).
- The staff at the FCC are probably already slowwalking this...
And while campaigning on Mozilla's behalf may be odd, consider their reputation compared to Comcast's. That's probably the only argument you'll ever need to make to undecideds. (You want to make the makers of firefox happy or the people who only make appointments to keep you trapped at home waiting all day—and that's just one issue.)
No, I have nothing against Comcast--why? Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our lives
