Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Turns out the movie we're in is not Star Wars,
or The Lion King, or Harry Potter. It's Reservoir Dogs

"Trexit? Online bettors play early end to Trump presidency" - http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-odds-idUSKCN18D2E5
The bookies are getting in on it now.
Some, such as the online political stock market Predict It, have seen record volume during the last two days on contracts focused on whether Trump will be impeached. Others based in the United Kingdom are drawing bets on the less-specific question of whether Trump remains in office until his term expires in January 2021.
The contract on Predict It titled "Will Donald Trump be impeached in 2017?" saw volume of more than 100,000 contracts in the last 24 hours after reports of a memo written by Comey that said Trump had asked him to end the Federal Bureau of Investigation's probe into ties between former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn and Russia.
At one point early on Wednesday, the price of a "yes" contract on the impeachment question jumped to a record 33 cents, implying a 33 percent probability that Trump would be impeached. That compares with only 7 percent just over a week ago.
By late in the day, however, the price had slid back to 27 percent, just above where it ended late Tuesday at 24 percent.
Funny since Kill Bill's on right now.
(Though I don't think that's the Tarantino movie in question that our current situation matches the most.)

Hugging a Vanillite will give you frostbite.
The venomous caterpillar he uses as a wig must be getting stressed out. Poor thing.

"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's Dictionary@Meri: They have coasted for years on a mix of "free speech" and "no one actually takes them seriously" but before the election the worst they got was fake celebrity gossip (sometimes of political figures but not so nasty as it's been lately). You could get them on libel in theory but libel laws are hard to prosecute here when it comes to public figures because Acceptable Targets. Even harder when the public figures are in government as short of actual incitement to rebellion/violence that's what free speech is expressly meant to protect. Truth in Advertising laws exist but don't apply.
In other news; NYT writer throws up his hands and gives up while writing a piece about a duck ramp in the capitol Reflecting Pool how how it attracted controversy.
This is not The Onion.

Seriously, what kind of asshole rants about government waste when talking about a duck ramp? How much did the thing even cost? Talk about Skewed Priorities.
Oh wait, it's a Republican Rep from North Carolina. That explains it.

Disgusted, but not surprisedIt's well documented that being President ages you 20 years in under a decade. That was the only silver lining I took out of this whole fiasco: a chance to subject the Drumpf to The Last Crusade treatment.
Or maybe Stephen Miller is draining his lifeforce. Dude's already a vampire.
The Trump campaign reportedly had 18 undisclosed contacts with Russia, though none of them appear to be outright illegal.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.Frontline investigates
how the Bundy family’s fight against the federal government invigorated armed militias and “patriot” groups — helping them grow to levels not seen in decades. Only available in the US for now, but I'm sure everyone here is resourceful.
SO, the Drudge Report seems to have gotten a statement from Roger Ailes' wife saying he has died.

"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Guy was a shitty human being who was a big part of why FOX is what it is. I'm not going to celebrate his death since I'm not that kind of person for the most part, but I'm not really sorry he's gone either.
Wonder if this might be a hoax or something. I'll wait for something other than Drudge Report to pick up on this.

Disgusted, but not surprised"All men have an emotion to kill; when they strongly dislike some one they involuntarily wish he was dead. I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction."
I say, at last an obituary we can rejoice from. After all the beloved celebrity deaths from 2016...
