Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The thing with dumping Trump is that Pence is not in a position to actually repair the Republican Party. (Ryan is incompetent, but he actually has the respect of most of the Republican Party, believe it or not. He has the seat he has because he was chosen as the hero they all needed and deserved when Boehner quit.) If Pence is President, the Breitbarters and Redditors will riot while the establishment and the Freedom Caucus will not be any closer to working together, and 2018 will be an even bigger Democratic wave (assuming they don't likewise get clusterfucked by the left wing).
Trump will do the long-term damage to LGBTQ rights himself, regardless (we call this damage "judicial appointments").
@megaeliz: When Trump is gone, we absolutely must keep fighting Pence. I agree with you there, but I don't think Pence's existence is a reason to not fight Trump. We topple Trump, claim one victory, and go right back to fighting against the Republicans.

"I rise today with a sense of responsibility and duty to the people who have elected me, a sense of duty to this country, a sense of duty to the Constitution of the United States of America," he began. "I rise today, Mr. Speaker, to call for the impeachment of the President of the United States of America for obstruction of justice."
"There is a belief in this country that no one is above the law. And that includes the President of the United States of America."
Green, who announced his plans on Twitter earlier Wednesday morning, called on the American people to "let us know where you stand."

Travel ban architect drafting Trump speech on Islam
Miller is drafting speeches Trump will give in Saudi Arabia and Israel.
In Saudi Arabia, Trump will "deliver an inspiring yet direct speech on the need to confront radical ideology and the president's hopes for a peaceful vision of Islam to dominate across the world," national security adviser H.R. Mc Master said.
“The speech is intended to unite the broader Muslim world against common enemies of all civilization and to demonstrate America’s commitment to our Muslim partners,” Mc Master said.
Miller played a key rule creating the administration's initial travel ban on citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries, which was denounced by critics as a fulfillment of Trump's promise for a "Muslim ban." Miller, who helped write Trump's GOP convention and inaugural addresses, is also writing a second speech in Israel that will be given at the ancient fortress of Masada, according to CNN.
Well...s***.
Well, having no more allies or interests in SW Asia may make another war there less likely.
How does one describe that feeling when you're in a train car and you can see the bridge ahead has a giant hole in it—over a bottomless chasm full of fire and monsters?

Local News (The gun thing was several posts ago but still): Nathan Deal’s office deluged with calls from ‘campus carry’ opponents
The lopsided totals, revealed in an open records request filed by a citizen activist, showed Deal’s staff received nearly 15,000 calls urging him to veto the measure – and less than 150 in support of it.
The majority of the calls were logged in April and May, as lawmakers worked toward a compromise that would allow college students to carry concealed weapons on campus while carving out exceptions that Deal insisted upon. That deal was struck in the final hours of the legislative session.
Meanwhile, opponents of the measure were passing around that was first created by a student group at the University of Texas, which has a similar campus gun law. The ad is for a (non-existent) bullet-proof “Student Body Armor” and it’s been updated to reflect Georgia’s new law.
- "So when is Deal going to let the people carry their guns into the Capitol? Don't we deserve to be safe there too? Why the heck can't we be safe and armed among our Representatives where the laws are made?"
Alec can campaign in red states by impersonating Trump.
