Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Exactly, if there is any valid reason for impeachment, then it's our responsability to do it by law and apply the same rules to whatever candidate comes next.

Rep. Justin Amash (R-Mich.) on Wednesday said reports that President Trump pressed ousted FBI Director James Comey to end an investigation would merit impeachment if true, becoming the first Republican lawmaker to broach the idea.
No, the reason why removing the Republican majorities in Congress needs to take priority over removing Trump is because they are the actual drivers of many of Trump's more harmful deeds.

On the other hand, I'm not afraid of WW3 happening if someone in another country offends POTUS Pence.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Even taking the House would allow Democrats to stop Pence from doing anything particularly odious. Of course, there is the risk that a Pence administration wouldn't be awful enough to get Republican voters to abandon the party to the degree needed to reclaim the House.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Depending on how the hypothetical impeachment is carried out and viewed in the public eye, doing it could probably help the Dems chances.
Frankly, I was worried about the healthcare debacle staying in the public minds, but an unpopular and criminal president being impeached is not something that's going to be forgotten by anyone.
Edit: So basically the exact opposite of Bill Clinton's impeachment would be the ideal, and might be feasible.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesRe: Trump impeachment chances
The Onion: Nation Allows Itself 5 Minutes To Believe This All Going To Be Over Soon
The Onion is right. This isn't going away anytime soon, no matter how much dirt anyone has on Trump, and no matter how much we want it to.
"Cynic, n. — A blackguard whose faulty vision sees things as they are, not as they ought to be." - The Devil's DictionaryKeep in mind that Pence would have to self sabotage his administration from the start, he'd instantly loose the support of Trump's hardcore supporters, then there's the choice of what to do with Trump, if he pardon's Trump then he's tied himself to Trump and will never live it down, if he doesn't pardon Trump...
Well we'll get to find out if Trump's suggestion that he's been taping people at the White House is true, I'm pretty sure if the Republicans turn on him he'd put every compromising tape he has out for the public to listen to.

He's not getting impeached until and unless the Democrats take the House next November (and even then, it still falls to the Senate to decide whether or not to convict him). It doesn't matter how patient the nation is, the GOP doesn't have nearly enough integrity to get rid of him.
Granted, how the GOP reacts to Trump can decide their reelection chances. But he's definitely not going away until early 2019 at the absolute earliest. And if I'm proven wrong and the GOP impeaches him, I'll eat my hat (luckily, I have a deep fryer, so I could well actually stomach eating a hat).

Here's the thing - with Pence as VP, he'll be able to do everything he would be able to do as President. That said, Trump's general incompetence and swayability may be acting as a foil to some of Pence's goals through sheer coincidence- but as people have said, we can't let fear of Pence keep us from removing Trump from office if that becomes a possibility. We'll fight a Pence White House just as fiercely as we have been a Trump White House.
It's been fun.
