Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Comey tapes: Please let Trump have been dumb enough to tape what goes on in the Oval Office. I really want to hear what's on those tapes. Even better if he pulls a Nixon and they're "mysteriously turned off" while Russia is in the room.
@Impeachment: The Republicans have to realize that if they lose the House in 2018 there's a very real chance we'll wind up with President Pelosi. Even if Ryan is dirty they'd still have Orrin Hatch to fall back on.
@Trump saying he can leak whatever he wants: Of course he goes against the "official" narrative. Of course, everyone should know his narrative is the official narrative, not the spin his aides (Who at this point, really should stop trying) try to make.
Speaking of that, Trump White House in disseray as latest leaks are tearing apart the house
. Aides literally had to turn up the Television in one room where reporters were to drown out the yelling of Aides in a different room!

I really want to be a bug on the wall in Spicer's office. I'm sure pretty much every day starts with him gathering his aides and having an hours long brainstorming session to figure out how the fuck they're going to do damage control on the latest stupidity. Then when the meeting ends he finds out Trump or someone else just contradicted the entire narrative he spent hours working on and he screams obscenities.
I'm actually kind of impressed he hasn't tweeted out any national secrets yet.

WTF...that info Trump handed the Russians? [1]
It was Code Word-that is, classified above top secret and compartmentalized by code word and administered only by the CIA. In other words, Trump could not have legally revealed that info period-you need the specific operation head to give clearance.
WTF, WTF, WTF...

None of which matters to Trump. He's the Goddamned President of the Goddamn United States. He can do whatever the hell he wants. And seeing as he's gotten away with any number of things that would have crucified any other President by now, you can't really blame him for actually believing that.

It is kind of frightening that, even if we impeached him tomorrow, he still knows a lot of national secrets. Any odds he will try to use them to secure business deals?
By the way, in relation to Krugman, I would argue that we still need targeted stimulus spending to help people being left behind by the latest economic upswing.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.![]()
If he's impeached, he's probably going to jail for the rest of his life, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Now if he resigns and Pence/Ryan/Hatch pardons him, then I would worry.
Yes, it would be insider trading. But he could still do a lot of damage before he gets arrested.

"Where does the whole dipping dots thing come from anyway?"
He's been derisive about Dippin' Dots on more than one occasion.
It became a meme because it's such an odd thing to complain about.

Re: business trading. Wasn't there a story doing the rounds that he was manipulating the stock markets? At one point, while still only President-elect, he was sending out tweets damaging a business, whose shares temporarily crashed in response. His family bought the shares at knock down prices before the price could recover.

That'd be a real crappy move for them to do...
Honestly, at this point, I think the Republican party is dead by 2021. Yes, in 2018 they may retain or gain in the Senate, but they are certainly screwed in the House and in several States (including North Carolina). 2020 is absolutely going to be a blood bath for the Republicans, especially if they keep Trump as their Party's Presidential candidate. Not to mention all the damage he and his Congress could (and most likely will) cause between now and 2020.

European official to AP: Country might stop sharing intel with U.S.
It occurs to me that US-allied countries may find they have no choice but to make this threat just to reassure their own sources. Any source giving intel to a US ally is likely to be very nervous, just in case the country they're giving the intel to decides to share it with the US.
This could affect more than simply the US's ability to obtain intel.
Such sharing "could be a risk for our sources," the official said.
The official spoke only on condition that neither he nor his country be identified, because he was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.
At the White House, Trump said in his tweets, "I wanted to share with Russia (at an openly scheduled W.H. meeting) which I have the absolute right to do, facts pertaining ... to terrorism and airline flight safety. Humanitarian reasons, plus I want Russia to greatly step up their fight against ISIS & terrorism."
Trump shared details about an Islamic State terror threat related to the use of laptop computers on aircraft with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Russian ambassador to the U.S. Sergey Kislyak, a senior U.S official told AP. The classified information had been shared with the president by an ally, violating the confidentiality of an intelligence-sharing agreement with that country, the official said.
Trump later was informed that he had broken protocol and White House officials placed calls to the National Security Agency and the CIA looking to minimize any damage.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly, would not say which country's intelligence was divulged.
The disclosure put a source of intelligence on the Islamic State at risk, according to The Washington Post, which first reported the disclosure on Monday.
The CIA and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence have declined to comment.

If people that aren't gerrymandered into blue districts vote blue regardless of how they normally vote (IE, vote red), it doesn't matter how gerrymandered they are; they will vote Democrat and Democrats will win. Several Gerrymandering Cases have already been ruled against (including in Virginia and Texas), as have several Voter Suppression laws (like in North Carolina).
And if the Democrats gain control of their States in 2018-2020, then the Republicans can't Gerrymander those states to make them Republican Havens.

I don't think this changes things, but is someone showing some self awareness? GOP strategist: GOP would have 'rightly' tried to impeach Clinton for classified disclosure
