The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I still think Republicare is best. It's not just Trump's idiotic plan. It should hang on the entire party.

I think it's obvious what Trump's real problem is:

It's because of Cory In The House. Corey, the greatest American hero of all time, is impeding him at every turn.

@Dingo: Last I heard Quist was down six points, but that polling was before a recording of the GOP nominee badmouthing his would be constituents got leaked, and the shift in narrative this article describes definitely favors Quist.

[up] I don't know, I'll have to go find it.

Edit: He was privately rooting for Trumpcare despite campaigning on preserving several key features of Obamacare. So not badmouthing his constituents, but getting caught blatantly lying to their faces. That wouldn't impede Donald Trump very much, but thankfully very few people seem capable of replicating his legendary feats of bullshitting people.

On the issue of that article re: Trump's indictment: the same site has an article claiming that Senator Hatch has been given the security briefings which would be needed if he was to become President. It's claimed that the evidence in the FBI investigation (there are two grand juries, in New York and Virginia, and sources say one is complete, the other almost complete) is not just about Trump's ties to Russia rigging the election or his illegal business practices, but the things he's said and done regarding the firing of Comey. Basically, that like with Nixon, he's shot himself in the foot by giving away too much, revealing that he did indeed fire him to end the investigation rather than for the reasons given initially, meaning he is guilty of obstruction of justice. The article claims that that is why both he and Pence would be indicted, and that meanwhile Ryan is aware (due to speaking to the Russian ambassador at the RNC) that the GOP accepted laundered money from the Russians and didn't tell anyone about it. So he'd be pulled down as well, and this is why Hatch would be receiving those briefings. It's also noted that the money laundering thing has resulted in the entire GOP organization having charges brought against it.

Again, this is all based only on that blog and some tweets, so we'll need proof from the MSM (or from Comey's Senate testimony) before we know for sure. But at least we know what to look for to verify this.

[up]x4 ... I seriously doubt anyone's gonna get Ryan and especially Pence on either Money Laundering or Obstruction of Justice. I suspect Pence was told that Trump fired Comey because of Sessions and Rosenstadt(?)'s recommendation, and was just as surprised as everyone else when Trump contradicted him (Pence is probably not told a lot of things). It's nice that Trump might actually be getting in trouble for Obstructing Justice, though, but again, I will be taking that article with a grain of salt, especially with the claim that Ryan accepted laundered Russian Money.

If Trump and Ryan are both impeached, though, then expect chaos; not just in Washington DC, not just in the Republican Party, but in a lot of major States and Cities...

Would Ryan have to be impeached? I thought that was just for executives.

Also, does anyone think Pence is kept in the dark because they want him to have Plausible Deniability, or does assuming stupidity before malice come into play and we assume they just aren't bothering?

[up] That's why I specified executives, since we recently had that case of a governor resigning to avoid impeachment. Just didn't completely realize it applied to legislature, too.

Yeah the idea that this would take down people beyond Trump makes me almost certain that it's not real, Trump and maybe Pence going is realistic, but it hitting Ryan as well? That's just fantasy land.

Plus you'd need the House and Senate to impeach and convict all three of them, that's just not happening outside of a literal revolution.

[up]There are a couple of ways to bypass an impeachment, but they are highly specific and seriously ugly in implementation-if we get to that point, continuous civil unrest is pretty much a best case scenario.

[up] Putin is not why Trump has by and large coasted through life without suffering real consequences for awful behavior. Putin is not why America has such a shitty and outdated electoral system. Putin is not why large portions of America have become increasingly out of touch with each other. Putin is not why a good portion of US culture revolves around glorifying wealth and celebrity.
