Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

County that voted for no taxes is suffering for it
Naturally, it went bigly for Trump. Libraries are shut down the sheriff;s office isn't run around the clock
Huh, I missed the troll, ok.

I would personally find deportation valid when talking about non-citizens or permanent residents convicted of a serious crime after a fair trial*, or if they're being searched for trial in their country of origin (and the penalty isn't death). But that's a moral position rather than a legal one.
*Understanding serious as "would result in jail-time" (so murder, rape, assault, theft, fraud, etc), and assuming no laws made to criminalize being an immigrant, also, getting in illegally is not considered a crime for the sake of this if you succeed, getting caught trying to cross means getting sent back.

1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KV
The 2018 midterms are looking favorable thus far. If things work out there it may be a good sign for 2020. Then again, it didn't do the GOP much good in 2012, so maybe I'm being optimistic.
Yeah, I think that is optimistic. Media and people in general don't care a quarter as much about the mid-terms as they do the 4 year election.

Projections already shown Dem gains, and how most people want the Dems to take the House back.
My issue is less with it being able to happen, and more keeping it in the public's mind. Though that seems like it's going to happen, either because Dems are actually being good about it, or because this just pissed that many people off.
Still, a year and half is a long time. I can get being cautiously optimistic, with emphasis on "cautiously" there.
A large part of it is being convinced that taxes are a waste because they're mismanaged or misappropriate. Which in itself isn't an invalid point, but has obviously been pushed way too far for many people.

@ the tax-free county: I'm reminded of Robert A Heinlein's depiction of Lunar society in his various novels. True, there were no taxes, but you still had to pay for services on an as-needed basis. And pay, and pay, and pay... which turned out to be even more annoying than having to fill out tax forms once a year, because the providers of said services became extremely mercenary in their outlook.

This Space Intentionally Left Blank.
Even putting Trump aside, when several people here characterize anyone who is willing to vote Republican at all, regardless of reasoning as a terrible person, why would any of them want to come here.
Of course, that's not everyone, as that's a frequent point of contention, but it happens enough that I get why otherwise "moderate" Republicans would be turned off by discussion here, besides just disagree with politics.
Of course, again, that's hardly something unique to these forums.

Caitlyn Jenner is "upset with Trump", may join politics as a Republican anyway
.
I would just narrow the criminal exception to those who came solely to set up logistics for organized crime or some other pattern of crime that clearly proves said people aren't here to settle down and build a life. (What qualifies? Er, I don't know besides the organized crime thing).

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesYeah, I'm going to second LSBK's post from the bottom of last page, at the very least let's try to debate in good faith, without dogpiling any new guys for the sake of trying to convince lurkers who may be on the fence
.
I'd think figures likes Caitlyn Jenner inside the Republican Party machine are in the end a good, if even the most virulent backwards party allows a trans person to run from their platform it tells us that it isn't an impediment anymore to be trans. Whether she is a good candidate in particular is up for debate. She might be a Sarah Palin most likely, but I'd hope for a Schwarzenegger.
Hardly, check her twitter feed. She gets called awful things by her "base" all the time. Plus, she is just another 'Fuck you, got mine" person, as long as her personal issue is okay she doesn't care who else the GOP tries to destroy.
I mean they'll just bring her out as a prop to go "were not homophobes for REALZ" which makes it worse because people will buy it.

I don't know enough on the matter to say whether or not Obama's policies were reasonable. On deportation I have nothing against violent criminals being deported, otherwise the undocumented immigrants who don't hurt others should be given a path to citizenship so they can step out of shadows and be properly productive people.
