Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Biggest Comey news is still that he'll only testify publicly.
For ACLU I found this dated today:

So, Trump has been outright lying on several subjects when it comes to international trade and economics; most notably the US being the most taxed nation on Earth (ha!!!) and the trade deficit with Canada (there is one, but it is clearly in the favor of the US. But we are the ones cheating America. Fuck off Donald.). This in addition to the prime the pump gaffe.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects. The Problem, Lunar, is that, even if you're not a troll, you are acting exactly like one. You state a controversial opinion, knowing full well the anger it will cause, and instead of backing it up, you just say "lol u got mad" like a Troll. It would be one thing if you actually, honestly believe in Trump and his ideals (no matter how horrid they might be), but you have not backed up even one of your claims of support for Trump.
And the excuse of "Oh, no matter what I say, I won't change minds" is a bull excuse; if you aren't trying to change people's minds, why even bother talking about Politics?
Riiiiiiiiight.
Also, since there are plenty of Tropers here who aren't American there are quite a lot of us falling under several definitions of liberal instead of the US perception of what liberal is or means.

Inter arma enim silent legesFor all the spats that go on here, such as (as first one that comes to mind) the frequent back and forths between Ambar and MadSkillz, both sides are at least usually arguing in good faith and providing sources for their arguments via news links and the like.
It's honestly one of the things I like with this thread, even if it does get a bit Echo Chambery at times.

@Lunar: Assuming you're even still watching this thread, how about we try something that might be at least somewhat productive; try to list some redeeming/good qualities or moments about people in politics we really don't like.
In regards to Trump, there was that moment at the GOP convention when he gave a line about standing up for LGBTQ Americans, the crowd cheers, and he said "You know, as a Republican, I am so glad to hear you all cheering for that."
That's probably the only moment I felt anything approaching respect for him. If moments like that were the norm, I wouldn't be nearly as worried as I am now about the Trump administration. Care to reciprocate?

I've reported the rest of his comments for the combination of trolling and conspiratorial "the press is lying" nonsense.
Something I would add by the way—I don't think we should assume he's "just" a troll. After all, if there's one thing this election nicely demonstrated it's that Trump's fanbase (at least online) is made up, in large part, of trolls, who elected Trump solely so they could look at leftists and say "u mad bro?"
I honestly miss the 2012 election. Mitt Romney had his fair share of trolls out there, but he also had people who could mount at least a pretense of a defence for his policies. I've yet to meet a Trump voter who could.
He may be right about one thing though...I am not optimistic about the 2020 election. America or at least enough of a minority to win an election really is that bad. I know you guys have no reason to believe me and I was worried come the election but I was the only in my family that thought Trump would win.
We elected an actor, now a reality show star. As long as he says (or implies) "I will put minorities back in their place and they deserve it!" and look "good" on TV than a huge segment of the nation will vote for him.

Those are known as echo quotes. They're getting used ironically more and more these days, but at least originally they were put around a name to denote somebody as part of the alleged Jewish new world order conspiracy, ie (((Soros))). It's as idiotic as it sounds by the way.

I believe the thing got started by /pol/ (or reddit?) putting them around people's names (in tweets), to show how Jewish names (and thus influence) "echo" across history.
Because calling people "shekelstein" was not subtle enough.
Now, as we have just seen, there are plenty of people who believe Trump "winning" is all that matters; that his personal victories must mean that the state of the country is improving, and I don't see Democrats ever winning them over.
But there are people who don't project so strongly on him and have different priorities. For example, in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin, and across Republican-controlled states, they are essentially demanding the re-industrialization of rural America. An exceptional challenge for anybody, but especially this moron.

It originated from some wacko's comic strip which put the names of Jewish characters in echos.
"The inner parenthesis represent the Jews' subversion of the home [and] destruction of the family through mass-media degeneracy. The next [parenthesis] represents the destruction of the nation through mass immigration, and the outer [parenthesis] represents international Jewry and world Zionism."
That is literally how the person who originated this particular meme described it.
I feel a great darkness has come and gone from this thread, a nameless evil that will be forever forgotten...
So, I have a couple of question about deportation for you people, for I value your insight, even those I might have slight disagreement with:
When, if ever, is deportation justified and was Obama's policies on the matter reasonable?

This troper also mentioned that the Earth was flat in another thread recently so yeah I'm like 90% sure they're a troll. Or horribly misinformed.
