Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Most political discussions, in my experience, boil down to "My side is right and anyone who disagrees is automatically wrong and an Enemy of the State."
Though, recent developments, such as the half-assery that is the AHCA, have prompted a slight change to this motto, which now is "THEIR SIDE BAD!!!" because, frankly, that makes way more sense than an actual, articulate sentence.
Or OccupyDemocrats. Seriously, stopped following them less for the agenda and more for the attempts to sensationalize everything like "Colbert destroys Trump with EPIC put down".
Seriously, who takes a news outlet serious when they use the word "epic"?

Fair enough. Though I think you're missing the fact that Trump seems to have earned a lot of the negativity directed towards him. Not even with just interpretations, but with his own, recorded words and actions.
When your words can consistently be photoshopped into the mouth of a Nazi supervillain or an utter boob with neither sounding out of character, that's a Red Flag.

There are better candidates for leftist news network at least (though without the pun so I can't blame you for that)
CNN is more like ESPN News Apparently

Change of gears: If he hasn't done anything wrong, what has he done right? Because, to me, personally, he seems to have taken all the accusations of corruption against Hillary Clinton as an instruction manual. Kind of taints my view of him, to be honest.
I'll also add to
to keep things civil as much as possible. Thumps come hard and fast when things get crazy round these parts.

Despite my snarky comment, I'd be happy if you continued to do so (voice your opinion that is). Most conservatives and libertarians have been more or less chased off of the thread, it's nice to have a dissenting voice, if only because the arguments between leftist and centrist leaning posters is getting extremely repetitive.

The fact that you don't think trump has done anything wrong has less to do with our biases and more that you don't have a clue what you're talking about lol. Either that or you're fine with ham-fisted attempts at authoritarianism :P
"Coffee! Coffeecoffeecoffee! Coffee! Not as strong as Meth-amphetamine, but it lets you keep your teeth!"I don't need a single talking head to tell me that he is absolutely full of shit.
He literally said that he fired Comey because he was sick of the Russia investigation. That's illegal. It's called obstruction of justice.
It really doesn't help that he doesn't actually make sense most of the time. He talks in this bizarre fashion that constantly loops around on itself where he rarely actually says anything with a coherent meaning. Also, the town of Palm Beach is literally going bankrupt because they can't afford the police movements for his security and the businesses surrounding Mar-A-Lago are going bankrupt too, because the security for the region is so tight that their clientele is severely cut down.
There's also a difference between people whining about having to pay for healthcare out of their taxes and someone terrified that they're going to literally die because they've been kicked off their insurance.

In the interest of discussion, I'll lay out my most basic current views, so you'll know where I'm coming from at nearly any given time:
- Donald Trump is an idiot.
- The GOP as it currently exists is untrustworthy.
- I can conceive of no skeleton in Hillary Clinton's closet, real or imagined, that would ever convince me she was the inferior option.

Issue there is that his immigration policies like the Travel Ban have been so poorly ordered and implemented that legal residents are getting caught in the crossfire precisely because of their race. There's also Trump's insistence on the border wall he only recently backed down on, which by all indications serves no real practical purpose and would do more harm than good if built since it takes resources from places that do the same job just as, if not more effectively, such as the coast guard.
Honestly, the thing that turned me well, truly, and permanently against Trump was his assertion that we need to go after Terrorist families. Breitbart
reported that statement exactly as he said it during the election, and if anyone was going to try and downlplay or change what it meant to make it positive, they would.
You will never convince me it is justified to deliberately target people who may very well be innocent of any wrongdoing themselves solely for their connection to someone else.

The second case is fair, and a bit of a non-issue. In the first case, the sheer number of undocumented immigrants in the United States makes it rather impractical to deport them all in a humane fashion.
Even if we assume Trump indeed means what he says in regards to his harsh words being directly solely at undocumented immigrants, America's immigration laws make it extremely difficult to immigrate unless you're a highly skilled and specialized worker, but meanwhile there's significant demand for low wage unskilled workers, and too few Americans willing to do that kind of work; thus businesses which employ low skilled workers frequently look the other way when someone doesn't have a green card.
The solution to the problem of illegal immigration are reforms to immigration laws to be more suited to America's current needs, and considering there's something like 11 million undocumented immigrants in the country, it's simply not practical to deport most or all of them.

Even the remotely good things that Trump has done so far (in which I include "doing stuff he promised" because hey, democracy), he has done with unprecedented incompetence. He is a stain on the very concept of democracy, and the sooner he is removed from office the better.
For crying out loud, China and Russia actually get to take the moral high ground for once. Get a grip.
And the wall is the dumbest idea ever. It simply won't work.

As an actual socialist I find the insinuation that CNN is in any way indicative of my ideals extremely offensive.
