Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah, that definitely sounds like he's expecting the White House to try and silence his testimony. He wants the public to hear him.

, according to six West Wing sources.
Considering the type of people Trump tends to hire, Spicer's replacement is likely to be less obviously insane (and I'm counting the definition of insanity that states that "insanity is behaving in an excessively bizarre manner that no one else follows, but being completely unaware that it's odd") but just as incoherent.

Honestly, part of me pities Spicer and Conway - granted, they're the ones staying in their positions rather than quitting, but it can not be easy trying to keep up with Trump's latest ejaculation.
"Why would I inflict myself on somebody else?"Given the recent prevalence of Sarah Sanders in press interviews, I'm inclined to say Spicer's time in the spotlight has probably come to an end, yeah.
The mischievous part of me kinda wants Trump to keep her around, just to see the reaction people have every time a headline comes out that says something like, "Sanders defends Trump kicking babies", but that's because I'm a terrible human being.

I doubt Conway needs or wants pity. Only Comey worked harder than she did to put Trump in office.
There's so much potential for black humor about, i don't think it qualifies anyone as terrible anymore. (Besides the standards for terrible are so high these days...)
In actual news: An important journalistic shift: The rise of ‘Donald Trump claims’
The victorious quarterback said this. The bereaved wife said that.
The word we were always advised to avoid was “claim.” As in, “The mayor claims that he has fixed the deficit.” The word suggests doubt as to the truth of the matter.
But we now have a president of the United States who tells us that one need not believe everything his press secretary says. Who says that he sees no need to stand by past utterances. Who sees hundreds of thousands of people and assures us they are millions upon millions.
This morning, I found myself writing the words “Trump claims.” It made me uncomfortable, and I wondered if I was alone in this.
So I did a little Google work on certain phrases:
- “George Bush claims/claimed” turned up 224,000 hits.
- “Barack Obama claims/claimed” brought up 169,000 hits. “Obama claims/claimed” raised the number to 298,000.
- “Donald Trump claims/claimed” resulted in 1.566 million hits. Just “Trump claims” raises it to 1.678 million hits.
Donald Trump isn’t just changing the rules of politics. He’s changing the rules of language.

Former 6th District candidate mounts bid for Dunwoody state Senate seat
Harrell becomes one of the first ex-contenders in Georgia’s crowded 6th District race to mount a bid for other political office. Republican Kurt Wilson will kick off a bid next week for Roswell mayor. More announcements could soon follow.
An ex-state representative, Harrell announced in December she would run for the suburban Atlanta seat. But she withdrew her name just before the qualifying period ended, citing Democrat Jon Ossoff’s ability to “utilize Washington connections.” She soon endorsed his bid for Congress.
“Voters in this district are engaged, informed, and know that many important decisions directly affecting their lives will be made at the state level in the years ahead,” said Harrell. “It is time we get it right on healthcare, education, transportation, and the myriad other issues facing Georgians.”
First elected to the state Senate in 2010, Millar is one of three Senate Republicans holding districts won by Clinton in 2016. The other two – Hunter Hill and David Shafer – have both announced bids for higher office.
The Senate district stretches from the eastern edges of Sandy Springs through Dunwoody, Brookhaven, Doraville, Chamblee and parts of Peachtree Corners and Tucker.
It was once considered solidly Republican turf, but has become surprisingly competitive. Ossoff won most of the district in the April 18 vote.
Democrats are also likely to target another Dunwoody-based legislative seat: The House district held by state Rep. Tom Taylor. He easily won re-election in 2016 despite a guilty plea on DUI charges, but he faced no Democratic opponent.
Other contenders in the crowded 6th District field mentioned as possible candidates for other office include Republicans David Abroms, Bob Gray and Keith Grawert.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesThis is from a few pages ago, but I wanted to add onto it:
"I keep tabs on those people for a while and I know how they abuse the free speech laws to get away with awful stuff. Specially the alt-right speech tactics to persuade people to join their ranks.
Such as spamming black-on-white and black-on-black crimes to create the notion that black people are inherently violent, news over feminists or LGBT activists who did something stupid and paint them as the norm, creating the notion that those groups want nothing but the destruction of while heterosexual males as a group, use code words and dog-whistles where you have (((globalists))) and (((Wall Street bankers))) be the stand in for Jews, including spamming how many Jews own or a related to media groups, news papers and news channels in order to discredit any source other than them as being Jewish manipulation of the public opinion. "
I'm glad I'm not the only one who picked up on this. Back when "the topic that may not be discussed" was a thing, certain sites would claim women were inherently more violent than men by spamming as many "news of the weird" stories as they could of women acting violently. It's really insidious, and those who are easily suggestible could fall into the trap of buying into the agenda they're trying to push.

Last night I had a conversation with a conservative family friend who was insistent that CNN was part of a vast left wing conspiracy to promote Democrat ideas and pull the wool over our eyes. I pointed out their tendency to directly undermine the left by doing things like airing Trump rallies uncut, and helpfully stated that an organization could not be an instrument of the left if all it does is undermine the left.
He had a brief moment of realization when the tautology became apparent before lapsing into the mental haze and start saying it was a leftist propaganda machine because he thought it was.
And this is a guy who I evangelized Clinton to for ten months and managed to get him to vote for.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

[The Hill] Comey willing to testify, but only in public
. Oh,this will be fun.
