The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Of course, but my response was to the specific notions that we shouldn't impeach Trump because then we'd have President Pence (which is still preferable to Trump for the reasons given at the top of the page) or because leaving him in for the full term might improve the Democratic candidate's chances in 2020.

California is the chief reason America is the only developed economy to achieve record GDP growth since the financial crisis of 2008 and ensuing global recession, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Much of the U.S. growth can be traced to California laws promoting clean energy, government accountability and protections for undocumented people. Governor Jerry Brown, now in his fourth term, considers immigrants a major reason for the state's success: "39 percent of us are Latino and the majority are from Mexico," he said in a March 2 interview in his Sacramento office.

Far from losing jobs overseas, California keeps creating them with an unemployment rate declining to 4.9 percent from 5.7 percent in 2016, faster than the national average.

None of this is lost on the residents of California. They are proudly enacting policies in opposition to Trump's. The legislature became the first to vote to become a sanctuary state, and supported raising gas taxes and vehicle registration fees to improve infrastructure. While Trump gets the lowest approval of any new president after 100 days and the Republican Congress does worse, the politics of California are the opposite. A recent University of California Berkeley Institute of Government Studies poll found 57 percent of California's registered voters approve of the legislature's job performance. Brown gets 61 percent approval.

The thing about the top Republican brass is that they don't really care about their lower and middle-class white constituents' lives, just their votes. The AHCA proves that. When will the GOP voter base realize this?

[up] Never. The GOP voter base would happily vote for Sephiroth on an "I'll destroy the world by summoning Meteor" platform if he had the magical R next to his name, and they'd justify their mass-suicidal vote by saying "haha liberals! u mad that sephy's gonna kill u?".

[up][up] Might only happen if and when GOP policies actually hurt them, such as in the case of the AHCA actually becoming law. Which would be fucking terrible and needs to be avoided at all costs. Since that shit would hurt everyone.

A couple of decades maybe? The handling of the ACHA by the media and Democrats seems like a good way in general to just handle things like this and turn people against them.

I don't like the cynical approach a lot of people here express, but realistically wide scale change like that will take a lot of time.

One GOP lawmaker’s plan to save money: Turning non-English-speaking kids over to ICE

One GOP lawmaker’s plan to save money: Turning non-English-speaking kids over to ICE By Peter Holley May 11 at 8:03 PM

Oklahoma state Rep. Mike Ritze, right, on the floor of the House in Oklahoma City on April 17. (Sue Ogrocki/Associated Press) Republicans in the Oklahoma state legislature have a challenge on their hands: figuring out how to address a gaping, $900 million hole in the state budget without raising taxes.

Some lawmakers have proposed firing nonessential college employees. Others want to drop a film tax credit, saving the state as much as $5 million.

Republican Rep. Mike Ritze told CBS affiliate KWTV that he has another proposal in mind: rounding up the state’s 82,000 non-English-speaking students and handing them over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Nightmarish implications aside for a moment non-native English speaker/English learner does not equate to unauthorized immigrant.

But seriously, it's like they're trying to outdo one another in the appalling department.

A Texas House bill would increase the prices of a taprooms own beer.

Why?

Because it would require them to sell their own beer to a middle man before they could purchase it back and sell it.

82,000 students who will either flee or be forced out of Oklahoma. Students. As it, people who are getting educations. Educations they could use to help advance Oklahoma's hospitals, forensics, engineering, agriculture, industry, and economy all around.

I've heard of third world countries suffering brain drain problems, but this is the first I've heard of a state draining it's own brain.

That would actually cost more money. A lot more money. Everyone picked up by ICE has to go through the massively overstuffed immigration courts, and ICE has to deal with accommodation. Deportation (the whole process, not just the last step) ain't cheap.

Not only that, but as mentioned on the previous page, there are a ton of legal immigrants who don't speak English. Good luck dealing with an incident after you send some poor Indian kid to Mexico because you can't be bothered to figure out what language he's even speaking and where he's from.

They are realizing it. That's one reason many of them voted for Trump (who was not the establishment's first choice, or their second... or their tenth...). He was always the "spoiler" candidate. That's why we now have an opportunity to turn some red states blue, assuming the Democrats can take advantage of it (not a sure thing).

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

[down] Indeed. I'd go as far as to say that the red states are inherently parasitic.
