The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, GOP senators are pitching Merrick Garland for the Head of the FBI?

That's....interesting.

Are they expecting him to be destroyed fighting with Trump as he inevitably would?

Isn't he a judge? How is he qualified for head of the FBI?

He's probably more qualified than anyone Trump would pick by default

Slate has a piece examining the rationale. However:

The Daily Caller was quick to note that Garland’s move to the FBI would also clear a seat on the critically important D.C. Circuit, thus allowing Trump to appoint a conservative to a court on which at this moment there are seven Democratic appointees and four Republican ones.

In that scenario Garland should refuse him. He's more valuable as a judge than as a member of the FBI.

Trump to NBC: "When I decided to [fire Comey], I said to myself, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story."

Trump just admitted to Obstruction of Justice.

lmfao

Source, btw

Garland's not without relevant experience. Working with the Justice Department he was part of investigating and prosecuting the Oklohoma City bombing.

It does come with a caveat: it would open his seat in the D.C. circuit court.

[up]x7 He has a Law Degree, and like Comey, was a Lawyer. Apparently, all the heads of the FBI have been lawyers.

It's at least a nice gesture if true, but I'm not sure what they actually want from Garland...

[up]x2 The Democrats, as long as they take the house in 2018, are almost guaranteed to push for Impeachment at this point. Even if the Senate refuses to act, or does not actually impeach him, Trump is just begging for it at this point.

[up]They cannot convict for an impeachment without GOP senators until at least 2021, and I would rather not think about a blue House impeaching Trump without the votes to convict.

Impeachment won't actually do any good. It'll let the Republicans write off their losses too easily.

The only way he can be properly removed from office is on treason charges and if we get a huge chunk of the GOP with him.

And for all my saber rattling I don't think he actually qualifies.

Oh really when?

If Trump is blatantly guilty, a Democratic House could vote to impeach, and then the Republicans would suffer for acquitting him.

Is there even a chance of the Democrats taking the House in the near future?

Wryte Since: Jul, 2010

IIRC, odds are favorable for the Dems to take the House in '18. Trouble is, odds are also currently in favor of the Republicans gaining in the senate at the same time.

Though if Trump continues to trend the way he does (constant failures, setbacks and scandals), taking the Senate is not out of the question. Unlikely, but not impossible.

[up]Which would not matter for an impeachment-best case scenario, they take 10 seats and hold everything, leaving them about 9 senators short of the 2/3 impeachment requirement.

About Ro Khanna: He's taken more Wall Street money than any other candidate in 2016. Now, this shouldn't really matter to you, or me, or anyone else in the world, but you'd think it would matter to the Just Us Democrats who are now endorsing him.

Justice Democrats operates on tribal mentality. He said he's one of them so it doesn't matter what that he took that amount of money.

Which is why they basically ignore Gabbard, Stein, Sanders, etc when they fuck up massively.

[up][up]Of course they do. Honestly, I think we need to stop letting them use the "Justice Democrats" label. They ain't Democrats and they aren't out for Justice. They're just a wing of Unicorn Brigade as represented by TYT et al.

By the way, a link to Cenk's old website, from his dudebro atheist days. He still called himself "The Young Turk" despite espousing very different views from what he does now. So if we ever needed evidence that no, he didn't use the name because of some nonsense, colloquial, "progressive" connotations, there it is.

[up]Clearly they have been bought out by the same people who owned $hillary!
