Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

You framed that in Humor Mode, but you might consider Sincerity Mode.

All of Them. Eventually it'll be just him and his Android phone, tweeting away messages consisting of nothing but "SAD!" repeated over and over.

Disgusted, but not surprisedA measure in the Senate to tear down certian Obama-era environmental regulations on methane emisions is defeated...by McCain voting against it.
Lindsay Grahm and Susan Collins also voted against it; Mc Cain's vote was unexpected. Manchin and Hellickamp were also persuaded to vote against it after initially saying they might not. Mc Cain's reason isn't mentioned.
Re: Russia - I'm in the "something needs to be done" camp but going back to Cold War skuldugary is utterly the wrong way. There's no way it won't backfire hard on us and it cedes the moral high ground besides. Ideally the "something" is a multinational effort.

On the Russia stuff, I'm no where near an expert so I hesitate to ask, but while I get the call to action some of you are making, the way Le Garcon is talking (and has talked about this for a while) kind of comes off as Red Scare level paranoia, and will likely do more harm than good.
And, yes, I'm aware the situations are very different from then, but that doesn't change public consciousness on the matter, and I can't say I entirely disagree with that.

So Mc Cain has at least one vertebra... This is welcome news.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Collins and Graham voted with Mc Cain, only their vote was expected and Mc Cain's was not. I corrected my post.
We can't expect their support on everything any more than we can expect it from the very-barely-Blue Dogs but it's something. As for the impact of the regulation, Methane is believed to be an even larger contributor to global warming than carbon dioxide.
The question remains how they'll come down when it comes to fighting the Drumpf administration.

Yeah, the Russians are our rivals if not low level enemies. They need to be opposed and unfortunately the current administration is not going to do it in any real way.
I know you didn't, that's why I specifically mentioned that it's the GOP that doesn't want us to do anything.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangWhat can be done is for people to VOTE. We don't need to move carrier groups in or stockpile nukes. The solution is right in front of us — we need to be united in rejecting the far-right with our ballot.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

But then how would he get his daily fix of FOX News?
Disgusted, but not surprised
