Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So, I'm wondering, who could be Julian's Good Counterpart, Anonymous (ish)?
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.
Definitely not Anonymous, since they barely do anything beyond DDoS these days.
I'd go with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, who broke the Panama Papers without doxing anyone in the process.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThe firing of Comey seems like yet another reflexive action by Trump, without any forethought or consideration for appearance or consequences. Yes, Comey has demonstrated that he's more a political hack than a law enforcement officer in recent years, but it's also true that Trump is firing a person who is in charge of an investigation against him, which is a blatant conflict of interest.
Nutshell: Comey may need to go, but the way in which it was done looks shady as hell.
Edited to add: And now Trump can appoint someone who is hilariously partisan to the position of FBI Director, instead of Comey who was at least pretending to be sort of neutral.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Six months and not ONE piece of actual evidence of Russia "hacking" the election. Because it didn't happen. Julian Assange didn't get info from the Russians, a DNC employee named Seth Rich leaked the emails. Russia hoax is a cover-up.
Clapper said there was no evidence of collusion with Russia. And Comey himself exonerated Trump three times.
Honestly, the fact that Trump is clearly trying to bury it (however ineptly) indicates that, at the very least, Trump thinks that there's something of value to that. Otherwise, he'd just sue.
And we do know for sure that Trump has been heavily influenced by people we know Russia has dirt on and stuff like that.

Further on the subject of things I wasn't sure about taking seriously, a person in another board I follow posted this initially without any more context than the following two quotations
“Just turn the lights off. Turn the lights off,” he ordered. “We'll take care of this. ... Can you just turn that light off?”
Spicer got his wish and was soon standing in near darkness between two tall hedges, with more than a dozen reporters closely gathered around him. For 10 minutes, he responded to a flurry of questions, vacillating between light-hearted asides and clear frustration with getting the same questions over and over again.
Does this sound like something out of the Onion? Would you be surprised to hear it's Washington Post?

Yeeup. Hideously corrupt and incompetent. It'd be funny if it didn't make you feel so nauseous.

I pity Spicer, he look like punch clock villian at best and having to answer to Trump....Yeah.
Also what zephyr said " it's a statement of nation character, that places the acquisition of material wealth over helping one's fellow man, will inevitably lead to a corrosive, anti-intellectual, and corrupt culture"
Yeah, something I noticed about US is the idea of screwing with other people is a best a side efect to the idea of Being Richter, but I think this would be best in US culture thread
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"I know people who say that Spicer was picked to distract from the problems of the government, but he sucks so much at his job that he actively draws attention to the problems. And it's not like his bizarre quirks (like the fact that he constantly eats gum and has a weird feud with Dippin' Dots) weren't present already. It really makes you wonder how Spicer hasn't accidentally killed himself by now.

Whodathunk it? <_<
On the plus-side, I'm looking forward to Comey trying to chase after Yates' gold place position in the Slap Republican Senators Down Several Pegs event. Don't think he's got the advanced unruffled technique to do that, but he could surprise me: it's a real pity it's going to be closed-session.
