The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@True Facts Stated has been busy.

Comey is still going to testify. In closed session. No holds barred. You may have heard me say this. Comey. Is. A. White Hat.

And just 12 minutes ago, he posted this:

Just in: Senate Intel Com sent lengthy letter to Treasury requesting detailed financial info on transactions of Trump, family, & assoc.

Looks like someone is finally trying to investigate Trump's finances.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.

Trump Firing FBI Director Comey Won’t Slow Down the Russia Investigation—Yet:

...“The Russia investigation will continue,” says a former FBI cybercrimes investigator, who spoke with WIRED under the condition of anonymity. “The director doesn’t run the investigation, the assistant director doesn’t run it, the unit chiefs don’t run it. There’s a case agent or a series of case agents assigned to run it all the way through.”

That means that at least until Congress approves Comey’s replacement, the investigation should continue undaunted. “If you want to stop this investigation, someone in management could hinder it, reassign the agents, block requests for investigative techniques, but there’s always a different way to get the information,” says the former agent. “There are ways to circumvent bad supervisors.”

It's a race to the truth.

“There are ways to circumvent bad supervisors.”

This is why appointing a random Trump stooge won't work, at least not for Trump. The FBI is absurdly complicated and it has a ton of black projects under weird code names, and as far as I know, the standard procedure is for a case to continue either to its conclusion or until when the people in charge specifically order it's closing. And to order the closing they need to A) know the case exists and B) know what the case is even called. Just saying "cancel all investigations into Trump" won't work because it's not precise enough.

And if worse comes to pass, they could pass it off to another agency on the side.

[up][up] Basically means "Good guy". Derived from Westerns, in which the heroes often wore white hats while the villains wore black. More commonly seen in the hacker subculture these days, with "white hat hacker" meaning "law-abiding hacker that works to close holes and stop malware" (with "black hat hacker" being what you generally think of when you hear "hacker").

I am just catching up on the news now because I spent five hours trapped inside an AP exam.

Holy shit.

I feel like a lot of my reaction depends on who replaces Comey but holy shit this is not normal, folks.

Depending on what Comey was planning on saying in his testimony this might wind up biting Trump in the ass. Now that he's been fired he has no reason to hold back.

Jeff Flake (R-AZ): I've spent the last several hours trying to find an acceptable rationale for the timing of Comey's firing. I just can't do it.

[up]No, Comey isn't a white hat. He's the reason Trump is in office in the first place. At best he's an Enemy Mine with the Democrats in office.

Going back to discussion of Democrats needing to better take advantage of flubs by Republicans, what do you think of this add by the Dem candidate for governor of Virginia?

Yeah, Comey is not a good guy, he's just not the asskisser Trump wants him to be. The fact that the Trump regime is using Comey's lies about the bullshit Clinton email scandal as justification for firing him is ironic. I'd be laughing if Trump wasn't in charge.

From our (or at least the) President's twitter, ladies and gentlemen:

"Cryin' Chuck Schumer stated recently, "I do not have confidence in him (James Comey) any longer." Then acts so indignant. #draintheswamp"

Besides everything else, what I find particularly despicable is that the crying "meme"- if you want to call it that- was started by Mike Huckabee, when he laughed at Schumer for crying when he denounced the Muslim Ban, and spoke about how most of his family was murdered in the Holocaust.
