Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@ tclittle- A true maverick.
@Tobias- Yeah. I'm not going to torment myself by checking out alt-right (and perhaps also some far left) twitter, but I imagine there's posts about Trump hilariously frolling liberals by giving them exactly what they wanted in the worst way possible.

x5 It's an even better idea if the Democrats (somehow, miraculously) get 51+ seats in the Senate. Then they can actually go through with it.
x4 Then, honestly, I don't understand the point of giving term limits to the Director of the FBI, because Comey was bragging about how he was going to be here for 5 more years, only a few months ago.
No Agency Head should have a Term Limit; they should all be dependent on the President.
x3 Again, if the FBI drops this investigation, I am almost certain the Democrats will automatically impeach Trump in 2019, no questions asked. And if the Blue Wave is as Big as the Red one was in 2010, hoo boy...

Impeachment requires a 2/3 majority in the Senate, and that is not going to happen in 2018 even if the Democrats hold every seat and take every GOP seat that is up. Not happening without Republican senators turning state's evidence or something so blatant happens it could be construed as treason, allowing the NSA to act.

The special prosecutor thing was just barely not ruled unconstitutional. it'd take an amendment to create an ombudsman or something. (Congress theoretically should do this but...well see exhibit A).
And the FBI is no substitute. See Hoover or the previous director—whatever his name was.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesWhat a surprise. The narcissist was ungrateful. This is why you can't appease someone like that—they'll never have a sense of gratitude. It's like watching someone try to appease their abusive spouse.
And Hideki Tojo doesn't have the connotations in Japan that he should. What of it? That said your use of this to defend (?) Cenk still doesn't work because in Turkey the term Young Turk is not a colloquialism and is not used to refer to some nebulous group of reformers. It's used to refer to the specific triumvirate of Enver, Talaat, and Cemal, and the people who surrounded them. That they deny those men conducted the Armenian Genocide doesn't change the fact that it refers to them specifically.
In short—there is no version of reality where Cenk doesn't know who he is referring to, and he doesn't live in Turkey anymore. He's got access to all the information in the world about what they did, and any denial of the genocide/defending of them that he does is based not on being brainwashed but on ethnonationalism that he apparently doesn't care to let go of. For a guy who likes to talk about rationalism as much as he does he's remarkably irrational on the subject.
Apparently Comey knew this was gonna happen and was ready: https://twitter.com/TrueFactsStated/status/862080429658132480
Wisconsin’s voter-ID law suppressed 200,000 votes in the 2016 election. Trump won by 22,748 votes.
"A new study by Priorities USA shows that strict voter-ID laws, in Wisconsin and other states, led to a significant reduction in voter turnout in 2016, with a disproportionate impact on African-American and Democratic-leaning voters."
... RECOUNT! I FUCKING DEMAND A GOD-FUCKING-DAMN RECOUNT!
Fiat iustitia, et pereat mundus.
A recount wouldn't change anything. The GOP's voter suppression tactics don't fudge the ballots, they prevent people from even getting to fill out ballots.

Yeah, don't everybody start celebrating. As noted, Sessions and Trump deciding unanimously to decapitate an organization investigating their relationship to a foreign power is not a good thing. Do not think of this as us beating Comey because we had nothing to do with it. Trump saw a threat to his power base and eradicated it. That it was something we also wanted is coincidental.
James Comey is gone, so what does that mean for the future?
Don't let yourselves be blinded by our desperation for a win right now. This is not what victory looks like. The last thing our party needs is a reputation for being really good at losing.
