Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Probably not, as Trump/Republicans would obviously approve of that lie.
But there is an amusing element of Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves, in that gratuitously engaging in some further lying about Clinton didn't save him from being fired.
But greater than amusement is my sense of dread over who is going to be appointed to fill Comey's place (David Clarke?)

If the FBI actually does have classified Intel that implicates Trump it might be time to just dump everything on the internet.
edit: Seriously, fuck official channels at this point. If Trump is guilty we need to know now. The Republicans need to be forced into action.

A link, mostly tying up what is already known here into one article: FBI Director James Comey 'terminated' by Trump
And yeah...not celebrating, not that my ImagineSpots about his eventual fate aren't far worse than being publicly fired in a poetic biting the hand that feeds/Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves end.
But Sessions and Trump agreed on purging the head of the federal agency currently conducting an (albeit compromised) investigation into their administration, and replacing him with a firm loyalist at best.
x4 And then what? Get themselves fired so Trump can replace the whole department with his cronies? Because in the event that whatever the FBI unveils isn't enough to take Trump down, (which is very well likely given what Trump's withstood so far,) that's what he's gonna do.

Jeff Sessions not saying if they'd continue the Russian investigation
. Yep, they're trying to kill it now.
Yeah...my first reaction—after "sure, that's going to be edited in a second"—was pure schadenfreude, especially reading that letter—then came the implications. (The lack of gratitude wasn't really a surprise—I just assumed Trump had no reason to go after Comey).
I suppose instead of dump it all online, the IC can chuck it all to France and Germany.

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesI think that a Good Counterpart of Wikileaks might be needed. Like a Manning who isn't Chaotic Stupid, or Assange who isn't Neutral Evil.

Technically, Sessions has recused himself, so he wouldn't actually know...
... However, I wouldn't be surprised if he's desperately trying to find someone to replace Comey who will. Considering how American Law works, however, Congress might bypass the FBI and continue the investigation. Knowing the Republicans in Congress, though...
If the FBI does drop the case, though, I think the Democrats in 2018 (because it's looking more and more certain that they are gonna retake the House) are going to press Impeachment charges against Trump, no matter what.

McCain on Comey firing: regretful, but within the powers of the president.

Maybe he was fired because of the Blatant Lie he told Congress this week (IE, the "Hundreds of Emails Huma Abedeen sent" that she didn't actually send, and Comey had to say that)?
