The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Especially since everyone knows she made that statement. It's not news. But this is the guy who randomly whips out the electoral map to impress people from countries that don't work the same way.

Well, given Conway's comment on top of Trump being himself and the large number of still with her tags with MS. Clinton's recent un-retirement, it could be another Strong Leadertm message combined with trolling.

Edit: And now I'm thinking of the clip beginning with Darkseid's speech to Metropolis after his first fight with Superman.

This might backfire to be honest. Clinton is out of politics at any relevant level, but this might make Trump look even worse.

If what you said above is true, then you were unaware that that the colloquialism comes from the faction in question, which is what I informed you of in my response to you. Which would mean you did not, in fact, "know all that already". Conversely, if you did know that already, then why did you say the thing I quoted above, knowing it to be false? Is there just a typo somewhere in your statement?

I knew where it comes from when I wrote that. I was making an important distinction between naming themselves after the Young Turks and naming themselves after a colloquialism that comes from the Young Turks. The former is disgusting, the latter just tone-deaf and dim. But YMMV. That's how I see it.

By the way, this was a few pages ago but about some counties in South and North Dakota having some of the worst life expectancies in the country: that's because those counties are primarily Indian reservations and conditions there are very near third-world appalling.

Nah, I was expecting that. Native Americans like African Americans have a history of being discriminated against - the history of environmental racism there is eye-opening. Still wondering about Colorado, coastal California and these montane counties though.

@ the Colbert Situation, the Guardian's Lindy West made an interesting opinion on the situation: whose main idea seems to be

Principles aren’t a game, a card you can sanctimoniously deploy when you want to control young women’s lives
The Fire Colbert thing is based upon a homophobic joke, but Ms West's statement makes sense in context.

Re: that party discipline conversation.

Institute a dues system where a dues paying Democrat can vote on intraparty elections and platform proposals.

I found the section about how diverse groups - say a committee made up by various genders and ethnicities - is more creative than an uniform one.

An unnamed GOP aide told CNN “we have no interest in playing the games of identity politics, that's not what this is about,” saying the group would “work with any member of any background who wants to pass a health reform bill.”

After criticizing the all-male group, CNN's Erin Burnett read a fuller version of the statement, where the aide detailed policy differences between the committee, saying “to reduce this to gender, race or geography misses the more important point of the diverse segments of the conference the group represents on policies.”

Huh...That's, that's an impressive deflection actually. I guess you would be prepared the third time.

Your initial comment said they were named after a Turkish colloquialism then went on to talk about how then name has negative connotations in the West. I was pointing out that the name's connotations are exactly the same in Turkey, regardless of what Erdogan's government might try to claim.

In any case, let me put it this way—Cenk is of Turkish descent and denies the Armenian genocide. You really think he just named the group after the colloquialism?
