Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

TYT's alright. I used to gobble their news up a lot a couple years ago. I tune in maybe once a month now to see if anything interesting pops up. They're way too in love with Sanders.
Cenk's pretty reasonable most of the time although he can be too much of a purist sometimes. I prefer to listen to Ana and Jon .
Jimmy Dore though, he can be a problem.

So the only hope is if the fabled "Democratic landslide" actually happens... And if it does, accelerationists won't let us hear the end of it. But at least the Impeachment process will probably start on the very day the seats are transferred.
"And as long as a sack of shit is not a good thing to be, chivalry will never die."Jimmy Dore is an accelerationist nutjob who wants to have a "revolution" on the backs of minorities and the poor while he sits secure in home doing nothing. He actively pushed for a Trump victory.
Agreed on the last part but "alright"? They're pretty much the definition of the lunatic Internet left, putting adherence to their version of the purity test above all else. Their coverage is essentially guaranteed to build voter apathy, and no amount of last second backpedaling during each election cycle can erase the damage they do before it.
And of course Cenk's a genocide denying piece of trash who named his show after the faction headed up by Enver, Talaat and Cemal.
Pence is bad in quite a few specific ways. Trump is bad in every conceivable way, including every way that Pence is bad in.
'Cause, y'know, it's not like Trump is doing much to oppose Pence's agenda. And at the moment, Pence is getting away with everything because he can seem reasonable next to Trump. Without a Trump for him to seem reasonable next to, he'd be able to get away with less.
Also Pence isn't actively trying to undermine the American democracy, and can be assumed to have at least basic knowledge of how government actually works, so he'd be an objectively better president than Trump.
Pence would be much easier for the Republicans to work with in terms of getting anything done. On the flipside I dunno how popular he'd be. He certainly wouldn't make the same kinds of horrible gaffes Trump does constantly, but he's not really someone anyone but diehard republicans and religious fundamentalists would rally around. And with him being much more expedient at ruining people's lives than even Trump, it wouldn't do him any favors.
@Ambar TYT doesn't just do political news. So even if you don't like their viewpoints, they have some other pretty good stuff on there.
This isn't actually accurate.
Cenk is no longer denying the Armenian Genocide and the network isn't actually named after that faction. It's named after the Turkish colloquialism "young turk" which means young radical that fights the status quo. Or so I've read.
But on the other hand, Cenk isn't acknowledging it either and has only upgraded to he doesn't know enough which is still condemnable and the name "Young Turk" has terrible associations outside Turkey and should issue an apology and have their name changed.
I agree with what you said about Jimmy Dore though. I dislike accelerationists.

@Mad That's sort of like saying 'Oh we name ourselves National Socialists Workers Party because we're National Socialist and for the Workers and not for the NSDAP'
And has he actually 'recanted' his genocide denial? All I'm finding online is that he rescinded the statement and then wuss-ed out by stating 'He doesn't know enough about it'.
'Oh, I dunno, history is hard' falls pretty flat in making up for Genocide denial in my book.
Or maybe I'm simply out of patience with Turkish expat nationalism/apologism since April.

"You can reply to this Message!"![]()
Way back when this was brought up earlier, someone on this thread described Cenk's current stance as a bullshit non-answer. That was true then, and it's true now.
And when they addressed accusations that they are an astroturf project funded by the dreaded Soros, Ana actually said she wished that was the case. Given their previous stances, it seemed rather hypocritical that they expressed admiration for a TPP supporting hedge fund manager.

"You can reply to this Message!"Some more info on Puerto Rico's economic woes.
Since Puerto Ricans are after all American citizens, even if our dumbass POS president doesn't seem to know it.
BTW, that $70 billion debt issue? That's on top of a $50 billion pension obligation issue. That's right, Puerto Rico owes about $120 billion.
The article also states that upcoming cuts to ACA funding will hit them especially hard. Imagine how bad the AHCA will screw them over if it becomes law.

Disgusted, but not surprised
Long story short, setting yourself up as a tax haven and advertising that your little island lacks some of the protections the states have to big businesses is a terrible idea. For starters, look up triple-exempt bonds. Puerto Rico is also living proof of why hedge funds have the nickname "vulture funds".
Puerto Rico's status as a territory means there are a lot of legal loopholes that could and were exploited by financiers such as the mutual fund UBS. This hits a bit close to home, since one of my relatives works at UBS. I'm pretty sure she wasn't involved with what happened to Puerto Rico, but I'm afraid to ask.
That's the gist of it.

Disgusted, but not surprisedThink of Kansas and Oklahoma's current problems. Now imagine if they lacked a bunch of federal laws protecting them from financial chicanery and other states couldn't be bothered to bail them out.
That's Puerto Rico.
Unemployment is rampant, people are abandoning the island in droves, schools and hospitals are closing...it's bad.
BTW, the Last Week Tonight segment also mentioned that Puerto Rico is suffering from a Zika epidemic. That epidemic is still ongoing. Yet another reason why the hospitals closing, doctors leaving, and potential loss of ACA funding (and the ACA itself) is so awful.

Honestly, how much has to happen until Trump finally gets impeached? I am stunned that he gets away with so much and there hasn't even one proper attempt to get him out of office.....
