The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Yeah; I'm much more concerned with "how" and "to what extent" and "to what ends."

Cruz getting smacked down by Yates was a thing of beauty.

He looked visibly shook!

Twitter's telling me Ted Cruz did something stupid in the Yates hearing. What happened?

Cruz basically said she should have enforced Trump's Muslim ban because the law says she has to do what the president says.

Yates countered back with the fact that she didn't have to enforce it because there's a provision in the law Cruz was quoting that says the president cannot ban a person or group of people simply because of their race, religion, or national origin - which the travel ban absolutely did. She knew the ban was illegal and so see chose to not enforce it.

[up][up]Do you ever have anything constructive to add?

[up][up][up]That actually sounds kind of interesting. You always here how an disturbing amount of natural born citizens wouldn't be able to pass the citizenship test. Still, probably has the same issues with normal standardized testing, though.

Don't knock the Texans too much - not all of them are right wing psychos that make one wish for The Water Knife to be truth in television.

Re:Texas high-school citizenship exams

Dear God, the hilarity of natural born white Texans failing their citizenship tests while Latino students with a vested interest in studying for it all pass.

They'll just then say: "But them illegals cheated! Put in a biblical literature exam instead!"

I mean, I'd image the vast majority of Latino students in Texas are natural born and thus have no more a vested interest than anyone else. Immigrants don't tend to be children or take their children with them.

[up][up]Actually, looking at how a lot of fundamentalists seem to misinterpret the Bible to suit their own goals, and a majority probably have never read the entire thing from Genesis to Revelation, I'd say they'd fail that test too.

You know I don't think making students take the citizenship test as a prerequisite to graduate high school is a bad idea. Too many people have zero idea how any of this shit works.

Honestly, I don't see that as an awful idea. Then we won't have people not aware of the reason the civil war was fought, like some people I could mention.

Reading the thread, I take it that Sally Yates has done a good job defending herself in front of Congress? Even if this doesn't accomplish anything, the fact that she essentially told Cruz to go screw himself is a thing of beauty.

Unicorn Brigader interviews Sanders. The good news—Sanders continues to say he wants to work with Democrats to avoid splitting the left. The bad news—Sanders tacitly plays along with the idea that the primaries were rigged against him and continues to not understand how Republicans win elections. It's notable that while Sanders doesn't say a lot of outright terrible shit here, the interviewer sure as Hell does, and Sanders only calls out one of them (the idea of founding a third party). Or to be fair, the article only lists one time in which he did; Inquisitor is pretty much a leftie Breitbart so I wouldn't put it past them to edit the interview accordingly.

I would not recommend reading the comments, by the way.
