Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Cruz basically said she should have enforced Trump's Muslim ban because the law says she has to do what the president says.
Yates countered back with the fact that she didn't have to enforce it because there's a provision in the law Cruz was quoting that says the president cannot ban a person or group of people simply because of their race, religion, or national origin - which the travel ban absolutely did. She knew the ban was illegal and so see chose to not enforce it.

That actually sounds kind of interesting. You always here how an disturbing amount of natural born citizens wouldn't be able to pass the citizenship test. Still, probably has the same issues with normal standardized testing, though.

Re:Texas high-school citizenship exams
Dear God, the hilarity of natural born white Texans failing their citizenship tests while Latino students with a vested interest in studying for it all pass.
They'll just then say: "But them illegals cheated! Put in a biblical literature exam instead!"

Honestly, I don't see that as an awful idea. Then we won't have people not aware of the reason the civil war was fought, like some people I could mention.
If anyone wants to try one:

Reading the thread, I take it that Sally Yates has done a good job defending herself in front of Congress? Even if this doesn't accomplish anything, the fact that she essentially told Cruz to go screw himself is a thing of beauty.

I would not recommend reading the comments, by the way.

I thought we already knew this.
