Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

I hear the "fleeing socialized medicine" line all the time from my trumpling family members thanks to this one aunt from the UK who came to the USA for surgery because back home had a 6 month waiting list. It eventually came out that said surgery in the USA cost her something like $100,000 in 1980's money, but that bit is usually glossed over.

It is not a coincidence that the USA has such a high incarceration and recidivism rate.
And as has been mentioned in this thread a few times, prisoners can legally be used for slave labor.

Disgusted, but not surprisedObama Warned Trump Against Hiring Mike Flynn, Say Officials
The warning, which has not been previously reported, came less than 48 hours after the November election when the two sat down for a 90-minute conversation in the Oval Office.
The revelation comes on a day that former acting Attorney General Sally Yates is expected to testify that Flynn misled the White House about his contacts with Russia's ambassador to the United States.
There goes that Pence excuse
New Survey coming this weekend! With stuff like this I always comeback to two things: either they're true-believers who buy completely into the "feelings trump facts" narrative, or they're aware that things like socialized medicine and other social programs are generally better for everyone in the long run but don't care because they consider it "cheating" or that people need "tough love" to get out of bad situations and the government helping is inherently bad. Both of which can be intertwined with racism or any other prejudice.
But this is just in regards to the (significant) minority of people who just can't be convinced no matter what. For everyone else things are more complicated, but doable.
And to add more fuel to the fire McMaster apparently is falling out of favor with Trump
On policy, the faction of the White House loyal to senior strategist Steve Bannon is convinced Mc Master is trying to trick the president into the kind of nation building that Trump campaigned against. Meanwhile the White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, is blocking Mc Master on a key appointment.
Mc Master's allies and adversaries inside the White House tell me that Trump is disillusioned with him. This professional military officer has failed to read the president — by not giving him a chance to ask questions during briefings, at times even lecturing Trump.
and then there's this:
This was not an isolated incident. Trump has complained in front of Mc Master in intelligence briefings about "the general undermining my policy," according to two White House officials. The president has given Mc Master less face time. Mc Master's requests to brief the president before some press interviews have been declined. Over the weekend, Mc Master did not accompany Trump to meet with Australia's prime minister; the outgoing deputy national security adviser, K.T. Mc Farland, attended instead.
If Mc Master goes...good luck getting anyone else to serve.

The hammer may finally drop today?

New Survey coming this weekend! Not sure if it's been discussed already, but the situation in Flint, Michigan hit a new low point as the city sent out 8,002 letters demanding that residents pay $5.8 million in water and sewer bills or risk being foreclosed on
. This is almost the epitome of Lawful Evil, given how the residents there still don't have decent water.
Wait wait wait... Let Me Get This Straight...... The people of Flint, who have spent, what, years?, without clean water are now being threatened with foreclosure for not paying their water and sewer bills?
