The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The FCC thing might not be a big deal. If someone complains to the FCC, they have to investigate, unless they've investigated the exact thing the complaint was about before. (Apparently reruns can be really annoying for the FCC sometimes.)

The current head of the FCC (Ajit Pai) is insane, but he's in the pocket of the telecom companies, not Trump, and the telecom companies love controversy because they think it equals higher ratings and more people watching TV.

[up] Yeah, that Huckabee tweet is just...what? Does he not know that Speedy Gonzales was an American creation? And drink a whole jar of spicy salsa? That doesn't sound fun at all. Even if you love spicy food that much, the consistency would make it horrible to drink. And honestly, it's just weird that the Republicans apparently love Cinco de Mayo, considering how they've been behaving towards Mexico.

They love it because it gives them an excuse to go "See? I'm not racist!" or something like that.

And honestly Hickabee should drink an entire jar of spicy salsa.

Of course, their "love" for Cinco de Mayo is blown by then calling it "Mexican Independence Day"...which it isn't.

I'm reminded of Jeremy Clarkson (formerly of BBC's Top Gear) saying, "I love France. I adore France! It's the French who ruin it for me."

I'm pretty sure at this point if health care were a human right (like it should be), the Republican Party should have been paraded in front of the Hague in handcuffs.

Unfortunately, we don't live in that kind of world.

Uh, it is actually.note . Three guesses for who's the holdout though.

[down]True enough, but resolutions have practical effects to the extent that language arguments show up alot, and its difficult to tell when international bodies actually want some type of action. Both are polite language, but resolutions have nice and strongly worded versions note . Albeit the US is a special case as action against it would be like the EU sanctioning Germany and France.

Thing is that the Council for Human Rights, like the rest of the UN, has no direct enforcement power. The most it can do is ask nicely for nations to voluntarily give up their accused citizens for trial. When those "accused citizens" consist of the entire leadership of a national political party that is currently in power, well...

Paul Ryan to campaign with Karen Handel in Georgia’s 6th race

House Speaker Paul Ryan will headline an event in Georgia with Republican Karen Handel on May 15, the latest high-profile GOP leader to stump with the 6th District candidate.

Ryan campaign spokesman Zack Roday said the speaker is “proud to stand with Karen Handel, a strong conservative leader who will be a fighter for Georgians.”

The exact details of the event are still in the works, but Roday said Ryan is “excited to rally voters to get out and vote” for Handel.

Since notching the No. 2 spot, Handel has openly embraced Trump – and Ossoff has largely refused to criticize her for it. But her supporters are eager to feature her on the campaign trail with a more mainstream Republican figure in the establishment-friendly district.

Ryan is likely the latest in a string of Republican officials who will campaign for Handel in Georgia. Ossoff, on the other hand, faces a trickier calculus over whether to bring in Democratic reinforcements to the conservative-leaning district.

Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, is surely off the table: She’s at the center of a never-ending string of attack ads linking her to Ossoff, which accelerated after she held a fundraiser in Washington for him. So is Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who will be in Atlanta on Monday for a Carter Center event.

One Democrat he welcomed to his side last week was Jason Kander, a former Missouri secretary of state who now leads a voter advocacy group. Kander said Ossoff is walking the same line that he tried to tread in red-state Missouri.

“He’s prioritizing local economic development and local issues,” Kander said. “People don’t want just another person who will go out and scream about what’s going on in the national level. They want someone who is going to stay focused on the people back home. And that’s exactly what he’s doing.”

Ossoff has dismissed the visits by Trump and other prominent Handel supporters, saying he’s not concerned with the “comings and goings of figures from Washington.” He was asked in a recent interview if his campaign will line up its own visits with big-name Democrats.

“I’m not sure yet,” Ossoff said. “I’m really focused on driving the economic message and articulating the vision for metro Atlanta’s economic growth and economic potential that will serve the dreams of Georgia’s families.”

Huh, that's funny. Handel ran as an independent voice in the first round. I really think Ossof's missing quite the opportunity to tie her to Trump, but then his image strategy seems to be: above-it-all, moderate, and qualified. As for Ryan, in Atlanta that would be an instant loss condition, but sweat-of-my-brow I do good all on my own is appealing to the northern suburbs. Then again, the article does mention his visit comes right on the heels of the passage of the healthcare rollback.

I mean, no matter what changes they made, it'll have to go through the house again- and considering how narrow a margin the latest version passed by, it has a decent chance of getting shot down there.

Pentagon to lease room in Trump Tower for the nuclear football.

Edit- I mean, I'm completely unfamiliar with how they tote around said item with the president, so maybe it isn't as inane as it sounds.

It's not unusual for the government to pay for that kind of thing. It is unusual for that money to go directly to a government official (much less the president).

But by and large those complaints weren't really justified. I don't see how Trump being worse would change anything for them, he's worse at about everything, and they largely don't call him out on it.
