Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Krieger: You can make literally any statement offensive and/or bigoted by mad-libbing words, and while the term "corporate interests" can and is in some cases used as a dog-whistle for "the Jews", at a certain point, you have to accept that words have actual, generally agreed upon meanings, and someone using them as a euphemism to mask bigotry doesn't change that, especially if literally all of the synonyms for those terms are also used in a similar fashion by such people, otherwise the entire vocabulary of the English language rapidly becomes taboo.
You may or may not be correct in your suspicion here, but unless someone gives you a good reason to think otherwise (ie using a phrase that's a well known and particularly infamous euphemism like (((globalist))) with the echo quotes included), it's generally best to assume people mean what they say.

Thought about the bill a bit. Isn't it one big loophole?
A woman gets raped, and they can't report it. Then comes pregnancy, and pregnancy is also the bill (,which, they can't go to the hospital) and "natural" childbirth pretty much guarantees the death of the woman (and most likely, child((ren))).
Basically, a majority of the population die and the infancy rate will greatly decline.
I'm calling this the Doomsday Bill.

Unless you have a minimum of 30K for a vaginal delivery, it seems
.
Yes, the entire thing is designed to screw over and/or outright murder poor people. Also,
"A woman is raped and she can't report it"
This is not a bug. It's a feature. The Alt Right wants to codify this into law as much as possible.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.To say nothing of the elderly, who are the most at risk, and also make up a notable (and often Republican-leaning) chunk of the voting population.
I wonder if how possible it is that this makeshift Depopulation Bomb could end up exacerbating the demographic issues facing Republicans. And whether it will matter, if systems like the Electoral College allow them to dominate even when they become a minority.
I'm pretty sure that half the Republicans want to repeal Obamacare because they campaigned on removing it. And they probably would've liked Obamacare if it came from their side. The Tea Party is just the contrarian wing and just want to get rid of any and all social safety nets.
Also I'm reading what Trump supporters from the r_The Donald are saying. My God, they're so far gone they's cheering this on. They're a cult now. Even the guys on Stormfront are more rational than this and they're explicit white nationalists.
Honestly, if the Right had their way, women would literally be forced to Stay in the Kitchen, all minorities would literally be thrown under the bus, and all the poor would literally be fed to the dogs. They make Snidely Whiplash look like the pinnacle of human decency by comparison.

Huh? Well as for me I can remain on my parent's insurance for two and a quarter more years, and they have a plan through my father's employer, so I'm not in immediate danger of being charged exorbitant amounts of money for my preexisting conditions. We'll also have to see what the insurance companies decide to price various conditions at. The list of things they can charge extra for is so massive that you'd have trouble finding someone who doesn't have one of those things, and insurance companies aren't Stupid Evil, just selfish and rent seeking.

You need medical drugs or professional medical expertise to treat any condition where medical insurance would help to begin with. Unless you're real fond of being in pain.
Short of being accepted into the military, the best you can do is hope that your inheritance, savings, friends or family have enough money to help should it arise.

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotThey've never forgiven him for being America's first black President.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.At the very least, I know I'm covered. I just got a neat little job with the government, and the benefits (health plan included,) you get from those things are ridiculous. (In a good way.) Nevermind that I don't have any preexisting conditions to speak of, so I only really have to worry if something comes up. And again, government benefits.
Of course right when all this BS is going on I've got a broken leg...

By and large, the nuts and bolts of Obmacare is basically a direct port of Romneycare, a state level initiative that Mitt Romney put in place in Massachusetts as a republican governor. Literally the only reason the GOP threw a hissy fit in 2009 was the plan was put forward by a black man instead of them. That became the rallying cry in the 2010 midterms, and a solid chunk of the GOP supporters got swept out of office by tea party lunatics who think we should drop dead if we cannot pay our medical bills out of pocket.

At this point I sincerely believe "OBAMA BAD!!!" really is all there is to it. Nothing else justifies at least one congressman voting for the AHCA without even reading the damn thing or pushing the scion of half-assery that it is through in such a rush.
