Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

they may ignore that rule to rush the bill through.
They can only pass it through reconciliation if it's scored as revenue-neutral or -positive. I wonder if that'll happen. If it isn't, they have to use normal procedure, which will mean the Democrats will filibuster it.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"On the woman who laughed at Sessions. I actually think the significant part of the article is this comment by three jurors on why they felt she was found guilty of anything at all:
At least three jurors said it was fair to say they felt forced into convicting her. “There’s almost no way that you can find them not guilty,” one said.
“There’s not a lot of wiggle room,” said the jury foreperson.
It sounds like she got slapped with a very badly written law.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Republicans have 52 votes in the Senate. That means at least 2 would have to defect for the bill to be unable to pass in the reconciliation process. I'm not sure whether Mike Pence gets a tiebreaker vote in reconciliation — if so, then 3 Republicans have to defect.
If they cannot push it through reconciliation, then it's dead in the water, so this is their only chance.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Tie breakers apply to all kind of votes, but since nobody of importance has discussed sidestepping the procedure question I referenced above so far, a vote by the Senate will wait for the CBO report.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman@Kostya Because Trump got to throw a party. Bread and Circus.
@Garcon The Bill goes up to the Senate where they have to pass it, with conditions for passing it still uncertain at this point (If we're lucky the Dems can fillibuster it and its dead.)

"You can reply to this Message!"@Kostya: It failed to pass the House last time, so there was nothing for the Senate to do. Here's the nutshell of this:
- Republicans desperately want to pass "repeal and replace" on Obamacare. They voted on it some ridiculous number of times during the Obama administration, knowing that he'd veto it.
- Now that they're in control, they have to deliver something.
- Their AHCA proposals are uniformly catastrophic for insurance markets, kicking 20 million or more people off of insurance and delivering huge tax breaks to the wealthy.
- The main reason why the first attempt at AHCA failed in the House was the Freedom Caucus (the arch-right-wing nutballs) insisting that the coverage requirement for pre-existing conditions be removed.
So, they rewrote it to cater to those demands so that they could get enough votes. This, of course, made the bill even worse, but it must be remembered that they do not care about that at all. This is an exercise in pure ideology with zero concern for the impacts on real people.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The court decision is welcome news. Albeit, registration in the sixth has been increasing steadily rather than in a boom.
But there's also: Ossoff takes aim at disgruntled Republicans in Georgia’s 6th
Handel’s campaign dismisses the efforts to win over Republicans, who have long dominated the suburban Atlanta district. She has worked to consolidate the GOP base and was feted Tuesday at a fundraiser with U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan — days after she appeared with President Donald Trump at a stop in Atlanta.
“This is a Republican congressional district. That’s why you don’t see pictures of him at his fundraiser with (U.S. House Democratic leader) Nancy Pelosi,” Handel spokesman Charlie Harper said. “He’s being funded by liberal groups to flood Georgia with highly scripted, poll-tested talking points designed to make Republican voters forget who he’ll be working for if he gets to D.C.”
It’s a battle that could determine the June 20 race. Ossoff has tried to expand the electorate by targeting left-leaning voters who rarely cast ballots in the special election. But his campaign has also aimed for Republicans who are uneasy with Trump.
It could be paying off: Analysts estimate between 10 percent and 20 percent of Republicans voted for Ossoff in the April contest. He likely needs to repeat that performance — or come close — to eke out a victory against Handel next month.
Democrats had some backup on Wednesday from Kander, a former Missouri secretary of state who narrowly lost a challenge against Republican U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt in November. Kander now leads the Let America Vote advocacy that targets voter suppression and gerrymandering.
“He’s prioritizing local economic development and local issues,” Kander said. “People don’t want just another person who will go out and scream about what’s going on in the national level. They want someone who is going to stay focused on the people back home. And that’s exactly what he’s doing.”

Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesFrom the San Francisco Examiner: Pelosi's primary challenger complains that old white guys are not welcome in SF politics
. Really not much more to say about it than that—he apparently likes to whine on Twitter about the lack of "an old white guy's club" among the Democrats, and about how white men have been marginalized in California. Coincidentally, he also thinks the party should move away from "identity politics".
@Physical Stamina: Conservative Justice is what they want. Where the only ones in power are old white guys, or failing that the minority in power agrees with them on everything and or/is crazy.
Edit: Forgot the @ symbol.
