Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations
and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines
before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules
when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The opposite can happen though, with an incredibly conservative family becoming even more firmly entrenched in their beliefs once someone close comes out of the closet, and they kick him out and demonize him.
Like that one time people thought Eragon was just a fad and then the movie came out and it cemented its suckage in popular opinion.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangSpeaking for myself, the thing that's changed my mind most swiftly in the past is seeing somebody agree with me in a shitty way. It prompts me to go 'whoa now, let's not go that far,' or 'that's not the reason I think that' and continuing the discussion from there forces me to argue the other side, and thus reconsider my stances.
Though that's not exactly, y'know, useful advice that can be applied to this situation. Changing somebody's mind by arguing against them is really hard.

That's it exactly, though- the problem with a lot of them is that they simply haven't been exposed to the other side's viewpoint enough.

Oh absolutely, but doesn't that self-select against most of them? Those that are hopeless won't search for it and those that were already wavering will find it.

"Einstein would turn over in his grave. Not only does God play dice, the dice are loaded." -Chairman Sheng-Ji YangThere's no real data on it as far as I know, it was just a bunch of anecdotes but it did make a lot of sense to me.
I really don't think you can say all Republicans are fanatical believers, some of them do so mostly out of habit so once they see something different that might make more sense or seems more humane then they reconsider things. Not everyone has super strong political beliefs.
Some people are never gonna change their minds, no matter what, but that goes without saying.

Yeah, that was more or less me when I was younger.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI have family members with SAD so I can give you a bit of a run down.
Light therapy is the most common approach to handling SAD, especially if it's a mild version. However, most decent light boxes are prohibitively expensive, even for people on decent salaries. The few affordable ones on the market aren't usually ideal (there are one or two exceptions). So, who is going to pay for an effective light box if the sufferer can't afford one out of their own pocket?
Other treatment, if it's needed, can include any of the following: anti-depressants, Vitamin D supplements (and a quirk of Vitamin D deficiency is that you may often require calcium management and DEXA scans), access to counselling services, potentially access to nutritional/dietician services, etc.
Secondary conditions that can develop as a result of having SAD (and which can feedback on the SAD to make it worse in a vicious cycle):
Depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, chronic fatigue syndrome, etc.
SAD and its secondary effects can actually start to mount up in the medication department.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.![]()

I see.
But still, it may not matter how much years it can take but the end result is the ultimate pay off, because doing that and achieving its what makes Humanity something of a blessed creation and at the time a rough burden to us.

Of course, that sometimes has the opposite effect. When my brother came out as Gay my father went off the deep end and became a raving lunatic who talks with ghosts and supports dictatorships. Sometimes "something personal" only somehow reinforces one's believes rather than change them.
