The General US Politics Thread

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

The fact that they added 'pregnancy' as a goddamn preexisting condition revolts me. They want women to have no agency-they're not just punishing sexually liberal women, but the housewives too. If the GOP could create a machine that made babies without any women involved, they probably would.

[up] problem is his voting base is so goddamn stupid that he gets all the credit and the dems get the blame.

Hey these are the guys who made "rape victim" a preexisting condition. If I believed in Hell I'd say they were going.

This reminds me of the fact that my sister basically didn't tell her employers she was pregnant (she had just been hired on to teach at the time, and she got pregnant a lot sooner than they expected) until her job's health insurance kicked in seven years back. Before Obamacare had passed. Jesus.

I'm trying to puzzle out how they justify "rape" as a pre-existing health condition. Yes, I know, sexism, but seriously. It's not an ongoing health condition. I'm so confused.

Okay, this is the first I've seen it mentioned as Congress explicitly calling these out, rather than the earlier (and more substantiated) claim of their possibly being classified as "pre-existing conditions" by insurers. Can we get a decent citation?

Hillary Clinton Returns To Politics With A New Focus On The Grassroots

Hillary Clinton has found her next role in politics: powering the “resistance.”

The former presidential candidate will help launch a new entity dedicated to funding and supporting the grassroots activists and organizers, with a focus on translating the energy of the opposition movement into organizing and tangible results. The project, first reported this week by Axios, marks Clinton’s first political effort since her loss. In recent interviews people familiar with the plans outlined a project that is still very much in the works, with details as major name and launch date still not final.

A Clinton spokesman, Nick Merrill, declined to comment on the plans.

The central mission of the organization, likely to be structured as a PAC, will be selecting a small but diverse number of progressive groups, new, old, large, small, to not only fund and support those groups, but build a cooperative well-organized network.

For two months, Clinton has worked on plans for the project alongside three partners — including Howard Dean, the former governor of Vermont and Democratic Party chair, and another failed presidential candidate. The idea behind the group, to seed members of the loose movement on the left incited by President Donald Trump, is a role Dean sees as unique and needed. “We’re not looking to duplicate or replace the DNC or the DCCC or all that stuff,” he said of two central party committees. “We’re looking to give these folks the opportunity to do the building they’re already doing on their terms, but in a more organized way, when the one hand knows what the other hand is doing.”

It’s an unlikely image of Clinton at age 69. The presidential campaigns are done. The book is closed for good on electoral politics. And Clinton, a mainstay of institutional politics, disliked on the left, decides to carve out a place for herself the ranks of the grassroots. In other ways, though, it is the one place she sees traces of her own campaign.

SLAY, QUEEN.

You do you, beau.

Unfortunately, I can see that being as well-received as her infamous "Pokémon GO to the polls" comment, especially as she's been the "establishment candidate" since 2008 at latest, compared to the "grassroots" candidacies of Obama and Sanders. I'm not saying she won't do a good job, just that it's going to be an uphill battle based on reputation alone.

My condolences to all of those here who're going to be affected by this monstrosity if it passes the Senate and/or have close people who would. This bill is probably one of the most repulsive things I've seen happen in a first world nation during the XX Ist century (excluding, of course, committing war-crimes). I hope you can all find a way to survive it.

The only people who have a problem with this are uninformed idiots.

I just think we have to accept there's a subsidiary of people on our..."side"...that have and will devote more energy to resisting Democrats, than the actual Fascists and Dickheads in Congress and the White House.

Oh, just saw your link, Fox. I think I've shared something about that yesterday. Good on her, I just hope it doesn't turn into another "paid wall street shill" bullshit.

That aside: Once again, Trump's past tweets condemn the bullshit that happens during his presidency. "It’s Thursday. How many people have lost their healthcare today?" At least 24 million thanks to your buddies in congress, you disgusting orange motherfucker.

This may have been linked earlier in the thread (I didn't check it) but donating to campaign funding outlets like so is one way to put the fear of hell into the House Republicans that voted yes and the GOP Senate.

If this bill passes, I have a feel a lot more Americans are going to be visiting the hospitals around here. Cause paying out of pocket at a Canadian hospital is going to be cheaper than premiums for a lot of people.

Also, less ideological garbage.

Is the cost at a Canadian hospital the same for an American citizen as a Canadian one? Is it likely to remain so if such a thing became a trend? I can't see such being likely because of who is paying the tax subsidy.

[up][up] You can pay out of pocket at a hospital in Canada, but most people don't bother because different healthcare systems cover it.

However, the government paying for things has an effect of driving prices down in general. They're still higher than you'd probably like, but there isn't anything as extreme as $500 for a band-aid. Also, the prices tend to be pretty consistent from hospital to hospital.

It'll probably just turn into "You don't have a healthcard? Well, we'll need your traveler's insurance, or if you don't have it, a valid address to send the invoice to and a valid credit card number, just in case." I know my area has to deal with a lot of Americans, but this is Niagara, so, you know, tourists.

To reiterate an earlier question - did Republicans explicitly put in "rape and pregnancy can be considered pre-existing conditions" into the bill, or just revert it to how it was pre-ACA? Because while it's not functionally different, it's a big leap from one to the other in regards to being Obviously Evil.

I was just saying "if". Also, Niagara borders on New York State, so it's likely that if the bill passes, the state will try and do something to stop the really nasty effects.
